Description

Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician II

Location: Rochester Eye Associates - Brighton

Department: Ophthalmology

Hours Per Week: 40 Hours, Full-time

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8a-5p, Thursday until 6 on a rotating basis

Summary
Requires a good understanding of ophthalmic practice and all sub-specialties. Possesses a good understanding and knowledge of ocular diseases and treatments. Possesses a well understanding of ocular pharmacology, knowledge of medications used for eye exams and those medications prescribed to patients for treatment of ocular diseases.
Possess excellent critical thinking skills, excellent patient care, knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage needed, and ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment required. The ability to communicate with patients, co-workers, and supervisors is critical. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.

Key Responsibilities:
In addition to those listed for an Ophthalmic Technician I:

  • Possess basic contact lens knowledge and the ability to insert and remove contact lenses.
  • Patient education and training on contact lenses. Train insertion and removal, and proper care of contact lenses.
  • Possess a good understanding of in-office procedures across all ophthalmic sub-specialties.
  • Assist the physicians in performing in-office procedures. The procedures consist of but are not limited to the following: Lasers, Corneal procedures, Injections, and Ocular Plastic procedures.
  • Performs a subjective manifest refraction using a manual phoropter to properly measure a patient’s refractive error and obtain best corrective visual acuity. Possess a good understanding of working with both plus and minus cylinders.
  • Accompanies the physician into the exam room to transcribe the history and examination as given by the patient and the physician. Under the direction of the physician, transcribe the impression, plan, test results, prescriptions, orders and anything else the physician instructs to document.
  • Possess a good understanding of automatic and manual measurements.
  • Able to perform automatic and manual measurements of the eyes based on physician preference.
  • May be required to perform clerical duties including: surgical scheduling, prior authorizations, coordinate physician surgeries with surgical center, and order IOL lenses for patient surgeries.
  • May be required to train new employees.
  • Perform other duties assigned.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Some college education a plus but not required.


Required Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years’ of experience working within an ophthalmic practice with Optometrist and or Ophthalmologist as an ophthalmic assistant. Or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience with 1 year of closely related clinical experience.


Required Licensure/Certification:

  • Obtain JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within 6-12 months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: S - Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

PAY RANGE: $21.00 - $29.00

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
