JOB DESCRIPTION
A full or part-time non-exempt position responsible for providing exceptional customer service to patients by assisting with the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a primary care provider or Nurse Practitioner.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with the treatments ordered by primary care provider as supervised by primary care provider or registered nurse.
- Assist patients at the Front Desk with appointments, insurance and other patient related issues.
- Interviews patients, measures vital signs and records information on patients’ charts.
- Performs select clinical duties including patient services, certain lab procedures, maintains patient’s medical records in an orderly manner, and reports abnormal results of any service to the primary care provider as per protocol.
- Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients including procedure room and keeps medical equipment clean and orderly. Monitors supplies in each examination room. Maintains a neat and clean workspace.
- Escorts assigned patients and fully prepares the patient for the visit which includes taking vital signs, completing the Health Risk Appraisal, performing in house labs , review charts for accuracy, ensure diagnostic testing results and consultant reports are scanned in the Electronic Medical Record, review health provider orders, referrals/prior authorizations, administer medications, perform treatments such as but not limited to breathing treatments, appropriately and accurately document the outcome of the treatment or intervention; assist health providers, consultants and patients as needed.
- Performs basic clerical duties including answering the phone, maintaining records and shredding patient information.
- Performs basic materials management functions to include ordering and stocking of supplies. Assists with maintaining a clean and orderly environment including cleaning all medical instruments according to Lab and General Safety Manual.
- Use Standard Precautions with all patients, specimens and equipment.
- Use needle stick precautions with all patients, specimens and equipment.
- Assist in documentation of incidents and untoward events and understands; participates in safety programs and disaster/fire delays.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
- Assist in clinical research studies
- Assist patients in completing registration packets and entering data into electronic health records.
- Update patient records, including demographics, insurance information, and financial status.
- Schedule new and follow-up appointments for patients. Contact patients with missed appointments to reschedule.
- Verify patients' insurance at the time of service and educate them on the patient portal.
- Assist patients in signing up for the patient portal.
- Request and forward medical reports from referring facilities to the medical records department.
- Collect required payments for services from the patient population.
- Make referrals to the financial counselor as necessary.
- Performs other duties as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Moderate physical effort required to include sitting, standing, walking and twisting/bending. Grasping reaching and repetitive hand/wrist movements are routine. Employees may be required to work different sites as scheduled to accommodate the needs of various sites.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Potential occasional exposure to low dose radiation hazards, hazardous chemicals and body fluids and waste. Personal protective equipment provided. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of accredited Medical Assistant Course
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or completion of certification within 90 days of employment
- Understanding of accepted nursing and medical standards
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One year prior clinical experience
