Trains non-human primates and other large animals to facilitate research activities and assists with data collection. Assists in animal surgeries, clinical care, and routine veterinary procedures. Maintains laboratory spaces, completes all necessary documentation, and ensures compliance with all standards and regulations.
Essential Functions
We are seeking an energetic, hardworking, individual, to fill a Research Animal Technician position in the laboratory of Dr. Omar Gharbawie (Department of Neurobiology at University of Pittsburgh). The lab conducts research on non-human primates to understand how the brain controls movement. The successful candidate will have broad responsibilities including training non-human primates; maintaining animal well-being; assisting with experiments in awake and anesthetized monkeys; maintaining animal records; preparing for and assisting with sterile surgery; ordering supplies and managing inventory; and assisting with lab maintenance and cleaning. The successful applicant is expected to work one late evening every month. Strong teamwork skills and experience in handling non-human primates are necessary. Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable: animal training, anesthesia, intubation, catheterization, and animal surgery. Salary will be determined based on qualifications.
