This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Technical SR&ED Writer (Software Focus) based in Canada.
This is a fully remote opportunity for a technically strong writer who understands both software development and Canada’s SR&ED framework.
You will take ownership of technical claim narratives, turning complex R&D work into clear, rigorous, and CRA-compliant documentation.
The role involves working directly with CTOs, developers, engineers, and other technical stakeholders to uncover technological uncertainties, experimentation, and advancements.
You’ll work across areas such as machine learning, cloud infrastructure, embedded systems, and enterprise software.
Success requires a combination of software expertise, exceptional writing, strong investigative skills, and the ability to manage multiple client deadlines.
You’ll collaborate with project and financial teams to connect technical narratives with eligible expenditures and ensure claims are well supported.

- Own the development of detailed, technically rigorous, and CRA-compliant SR&ED narratives that clearly demonstrate technological uncertainty, systematic investigation, and technological advancement.
- Conduct in-depth interviews with CTOs, software engineers, developers, and technical teams to identify and document eligible R&D activities.
- Analyze complex software development projects and extract the technical details, experimentation, challenges, and outcomes required to build compelling SR&ED claims.
- Translate advanced technical concepts into clear, accessible language while preserving the technical depth and accuracy required for rigorous documentation.
- Collaborate with project managers and financial teams to align technical narratives with eligible expenditures and broader claim requirements.
- Manage multiple client engagements and claim deadlines simultaneously while maintaining a high standard of accuracy, organization, and responsiveness.
- Build strong relationships with clients and serve as a trusted partner throughout the technical documentation process.
- Research and monitor updates to CRA SR&ED guidelines, requirements, and best practices to ensure deliverables remain current and compliant.
- Review, edit, and refine technical documentation to ensure consistency, clarity, completeness, and audit readiness.
- Contribute technical insight to a collaborative environment involving engineers, advisors, grant specialists, and other subject-matter experts.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- 2+ years of direct experience preparing SR&ED claims, either within a consultancy or an internal organization.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, system architecture, algorithms, technical experimentation, and software engineering practices.
- Excellent technical writing, editing, research, and communication skills, with the ability to explain sophisticated concepts clearly.
- Ability to conduct effective technical interviews and ask probing questions that uncover the R&D activities and uncertainties behind complex projects.
- Strong analytical and investigative abilities, with a methodical approach to understanding unfamiliar technologies and technical challenges.
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong understanding of the importance of accuracy and compliance in technical documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, competing deadlines, and client relationships in a fast-paced remote environment.
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and independently determining what information is needed to complete high-quality technical work.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical, financial, project management, and client-facing stakeholders.
- Experience working with startups or high-growth technology companies is an asset.
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, AI/ML technologies, or DevOps pipelines is an asset.
- Experience with legal, grant, technical compliance, or other highly structured documentation is an asset.
- Project management experience or formal project management certification is considered a plus.
- Salary: $110,000–$130,000 CAD annually, including bonuses and upside.
