The Coating Operator is responsible for safely operating the line and associated machinery to coat and treat seed to a high level of quality. The Coating Operator must be capable of working independently and safely to oversee the coating process; be capable of doing math to formulate solutions for coating seed; and read interpret and understand seed coating and bagging guidelines.
Essential Functions

- Performs typical operations of the seed coating rotor and associated machinery.
- Formulates solutions for coating seed using training, math, and coating guidelines.
- Collects data regarding the processing orders.
- Mixes polymer and adds to seed using the directions for the polymer.
- Programs the machine to dose powders and liquids at the appropriate times during the coating process.
- Controls the coating process for all orders and ensures the machinery operates at a high level.
- Works with the coating utility to ensure the process is operating safely and efficiently.
- Takes samples and records them when needed.
- Monitors the moisture and heat of the process and adjusts accordingly.
- Ensure the work area is safe and clean.
Plant Operations Progression Levels
Plant Operations Level 1 – Employees at this level are proficient in bagging, tagging, and stacking, and have a working knowledge of all process equipment including functionality, maintenance, and adjustments. They are fully proficient with lock-out/tag-out protocols and safety procedures (PPE, etc.) and must be able to follow work order requirements and perform lab sampling methods.
Plant Operations Level 2 – Includes all Level 1 responsibilities. Personnel at this level demonstrate full proficiency with raw material inputs such as glue and lime actives, including related equipment and procedures. They can support all operational necessities to supply and run the coating line, including providing staff direction. They must be able to accurately perform moisture, durability, and percent coat testing along with associated data entry.
Plant Operations Level 3 – Mirrors the responsibilities of QC Level 3 but specialized in operations. Level 3 operators are expected to work effectively with maintenance, logistics, and other department leaders and demonstrate mastery across process adjustments, scheduling support, and operational leadership.

- Ability to be forklift certified.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 year experience in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience in the seed industry.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme temperature conditions of working in a manufacturing warehouse. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
Physical Demands

The employee is occasionally required to stand most of their shift; as well as climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, day shift position. Days and hours of work are determined by the needs of the business. Overtime may be expected.
