Job Description
We’re growing exponentially every single year. That breaks things. You’re the person who fixes them.
Does an inefficient process bother you so much you can’t leave it alone? When you see leaking margin, duplicated work, a clunky handoff, or a system buckling under volume, you want to get in and rebuild it. Better processes, healthier margins, a tighter operation. That’s what gets you out of bed.
If you can’t walk past a broken process, keep reading.
Who Are We
At Contour, we’re reshaping education, one student at a time. Born from the frustration of students who knew the system could be better, we set out to build what we once wished existed: tutoring that actually works.
Since 2020, over 10,000+ students have trusted Contour to guide their academic journey, and we’ve grown to over 300+ team members. We’ve produced hundreds of 99+ ATARs, tutored the World-Record UCAT scorer, and placed more students into medical school than any school in Australia. That growth has propelled us into the AFR’s 100 fastest growing companies for four years running, and we’re now expanding nationally across Contour Education, Contour Medprep and Contour TestPrep.
Here’s the thing about growing this fast. Every new campus, program and team member adds moving parts, and moving parts create friction. A process we built last term, one that was perfect for the size we were then, is creaking by the time we’ve doubled again. Every three to six months, what used to work starts to cost us, in margin, in hours, in quality, in student experience. This role exists to attack that head on. Constantly.
- Hunt down the inefficiency: Go where the work happens, across campuses, programs and the support office, and find what’s slow, manual, duplicated, leaking margin, or breaking under volume. The worse it is, the more you want it.
- Re-engineer the process: Map how the work flows today, capture the starting number, redesign it, ship the new version, and train the person who runs it after you. You own the fix end to end and stay on it until the number moves and it holds.
- Protect the margin: Know our unit economics, what it costs to serve a student per campus and per program, better than anyone in the building. Keep overhead per student falling as we scale, without the student ever feeling it.
- Use every lever: Automation and AI are your tools. Where a process should be run by a machine, you make that call and make it happen. Where it shouldn’t, you have the discipline to leave it alone.
- Make it stick: A fix only counts if it survives after you’ve moved on. Hand every new process over properly, with the right owner, clear documentation, and someone trained to run it day to day, so the win is still there months later instead of quietly unwinding.
- Deliver wins, on repeat: This is a scoreboard role. You’ll always have two or three re-engineering projects live, each with a before number, an after number, and a date it shipped.
- Proven track record: You’ve moved a real metric across sites or teams you didn’t manage, by changing the process, not by writing a recommendation.
- Hands on: You can map a process on a whiteboard, then roll up your sleeves and rebuild it. You’re as comfortable modelling the economics in a spreadsheet as you are standing on a campus floor watching how the work actually runs.
- Influence over authority: You drive change through influence, evidence and a better way, not through authority over people.
- Scars you’ve learned from: You can tell us about a re-engineering that failed, or where you were wrong about the cause, and what you took from it.
- Obsessed with the results: You’re metrics-first. You don’t feel finished until the number has moved and stayed moved.
- Substance over certificates: Lean, Six Sigma or similar is useful here, but ultimately we care that you’ve done the work, not which belt you hold.
This isn’t the role for you if your best wins are decks and frameworks you handed to someone else to execute.
- High impact in a field that matters: This isn’t a ‘keep the lights on’ role. Every leak you close and every process you rebuild shows up directly, in our margin, in our team’s day to day, and in the experience and outcomes of the students we’re here for.
- Real authority: You can require any new process or tool to have an owner, a baseline and a measure before it goes live, and stop it if it doesn’t. When you bring the data and the better way, the COO backs you to change how a function runs.
- A flat, founder-led team: You’ll report to the COO in a flat, founder-led team that runs on gritty, roll-up-your-sleeves execution.
- Clear path for growth: As we expand nationally, this seat grows with us, and you’ll build a centralised BizOps team under you over time.
- Competitive package: $140,000–$180,000 + super.
- A vision to believe in: Everything we do comes back to one promise, student-first, always.
