The 1st Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is a key member of the Agronomy leadership team and plays an integral role in maintaining the club’s high standards while fostering a positive, professional work environment.

Position Summary

The 1st Assistant Golf Course Superintendent assists the Golf Course Superintendent in the planning, organization, and daily management of all golf course maintenance operations for Imperial Golf Club’s two 18-hole championship golf courses. This position plays a key leadership role in supervising staff, maintaining exceptional playing conditions, and ensuring efficient and safe operations. The 1st Assistant serves as the Superintendent's primary support and assumes leadership responsibilities in their absence.

Golf Course Maintenance Technicians, Equipment Operators, and other maintenance personnel as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily management and maintenance of golf course turf, landscapes, irrigation systems, and related facilities.
  • Supervise, train, and develop Golf Course Maintenance team members.
  • Coordinate daily work assignments and monitor productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Assist in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and course setup.
  • Assist with fertilizer and pesticide applications in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Monitor turf conditions and make recommendations regarding cultural practices, pest management, and course conditioning.
  • Assist in irrigation scheduling, troubleshooting, repairs, and water management programs.
  • Assist in the supervision and maintenance of irrigation, drainage, pumping, and water management systems.
  • Instruct and train equipment operators on the safe operation and care of golf course equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of pesticide applications, fertilizer usage, equipment maintenance, and labor hours.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety policies, environmental regulations, and club standards.
  • Assist with budget preparation, inventory management, and purchasing of supplies and materials.
  • Monitor labor, equipment, and material costs to help ensure operations remain within budget.
  • Assist in employee performance management, safety training, coaching, and development.
  • Assist with tournament preparation, club events, and special projects.
  • Modify daily work schedules and priorities based on course conditions, weather, and operational needs.
  • Serve as acting Superintendent during absences or as assigned.
  • Promote a positive, professional work environment through effective communication and leadership.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive golf course maintenance experience, preferably at a private club or high-end golf facility.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Florida warm-season turf experience preferred, including Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass.
  • Experience with irrigation management and water conservation practices preferred.
  • Florida Restricted Use Pesticide License or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Strong working knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, including turfgrass management, irrigation systems, drainage systems, fertilizers, pesticides, and integrated pest management.
  • Ability to effectively schedule and supervise maintenance activities to maximize labor and equipment efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, and club leadership.
  • Ability to communicate in English/Spanish or English/Haitian Creole is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and golf course management software preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight.
  • Ability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works outdoors and is exposed to varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight. The position may involve exposure to moving mechanical equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, fumes, airborne particles, and loud noise. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and required when necessary.
