DESCO Service is seeking a motivated Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) Apprentice to join our field service team in Northern New Jersey through the AAMI Registered Apprenticeship Program, recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with technology, electronics, mechanical systems, and problem-solving while building a rewarding career in Healthcare Technology Management (HTM).

About the Apprenticeship

The AAMI Registered Apprenticeship combines paid employment with structured technical training to prepare participants for a successful career as a Biomedical Equipment Technician working on medical and dental equipment.

During the apprenticeship, you will receive:

  • Paid on-the-job training with experienced BMET mentors.
  • Classroom and online technical instruction through the AAMI Registered Apprenticeship Program.
  • Progressive skill development with increasing responsibilities.
  • Hands-on experience servicing biomedical and dental equipment.
  • Manufacturer and specialized equipment training opportunities.
  • Ongoing coaching and performance feedback.

As a BMET Apprentice, you will develop the skills necessary to:

  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, and repair biomedical and dental equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and electrical safety testing.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions using industry-standard test equipment.
  • Document repairs and maintenance using our computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Communicate professionally with healthcare customers and clinical staff.
  • Follow manufacturer procedures and industry safety standards.
  • Support senior technicians during equipment installations, repairs, and service projects.
Requirements:

We are looking for individuals who have a strong interest in technology and enjoy working with their hands.

Ideal candidates may have:

  • An Associate degree (completed or in progress) in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field; or
  • Military technical training; or
  • Technical school education; or
  • Equivalent mechanical or electrical experience.

Previous biomedical equipment experience is not required.

Candidates with experience working on electronics, industrial equipment, automotive systems, military equipment, dental equipment, or other electromechanical devices are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should also have:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic understanding of electronics and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • A willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the assigned service area.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Starting wage of $16.00 per hour.

Career Path

Upon successful completion of the AAMI Registered Apprenticeship Program, apprentices may be eligible for promotion to a Biomedical Equipment Technician I (BMET I) position, with increased responsibilities and compensation, based on individual performance, successful completion of the program, and business needs.
