Position Title: Food as Medicine Intern

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship – experience can be used for academic credit if eligible.

Introduction

The Asian American Health Coalition dba HOPE Clinic is full-time, non-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves the uninsured, under-insured, those with limited English proficiency, and low-income patients. HOPE Clinic’s mission is to provide quality healthcare without any prejudice to all people of Greater Houston in a culturally and linguistically competent manner.

Background

FoodRx is an initiative between the Houston Foodbank and local healthcare providers to help patients with chronic health conditions receive nutrition assistance in an effort to aid in their overall well-being. As a partner healthcare center in the FoodRx program, HOPE Clinic is seeking one dedicated Food as Medicine Intern to provide on-site administrative support for our FoodRx program.

The selected intern will:

  • Dedicate a minimum of 8 hours per week towards their assigned internship tasks;
  • Provide enrollment assistance to qualifying patients who have been referred to the FoodRx program;
  • Perform callbacks and scheduling with patients to maintain program compliance;
  • Participate in Market Day Events and aid in the patient food pickup experience;
  • Create outreaching and educational materials for HOPE Clinic initiatives and campaigns;
  • Provide administrative and auditing support for HOPE Clinic’s FoodRx program;
  • Receive insight into the work of a Quality Improvement Project Coordinator and the public health field;
  • Transform academic knowledge into real-world application with mentorship from industry professionals;
  • Gain job transferrable skills and experience through assisting with public health program management and implementation;
  • Learn the intricacies of real-world health data collection, tracking, and analysis;
  • Participate in educational outreach events and learn how to effectively outreach and assist diverse groups of individuals.
Requirements:

Qualifications: The ideal Food as Medicine Intern would possess the following qualifications.

  • Education: Pursuing, or has graduated with, an Associate's degree or higher in the field of Public Health, Nutrition, Community Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field;
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), a windows computer, and Canva;
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with leadership, volunteers, and patients;
  • Cultural Competency: Deep appreciation for diverse populations and a commitment to creating highly accessible, culturally competent educational materials. Fluency in Spanish is required due to the needs of the patient population.
