Postdoctoral Research Associate in Classical Art and Archaeology in Princeton, New Jersey at Princeton University
Job Description
Location: Princeton University Art Museum
Salary Range or Pay Grade: $65,000-67,000
Description
The Princeton University Art Museum, together with the Department of Art and Archaeology and the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in the eastern Roman Empire to assist with the research, teaching, and planning for a future exhibition related to material from Antioch-on-the-Orontes.
Located at the crossroads of major trades in the ancient world, Antioch was a cosmopolitan urban center that regularly came into contact with a diversity of peoples, objects, ideas, and materials from across the empire. Excavations conducted by a Princeton-led team (1932-39) yielded a large number of luxurious mosaics, numerous sculptural fragments, coins, and over 12,000 small finds. The 100th anniversary of the excavations offers the opportunity to reconsider the legacies of the archaeological work undertaken at Antioch and to advance our knowledge of the site through new avenues of scholarly inquiry.
The appointment is expected to start on July 1, 2027, through July 1, 2028, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, following academic review and contingent upon availability of funding and meeting all other requirements.
Candidates must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree by March 1, 2027.
Candidates may have up to two years of post-Ph.D. research experience by the start date. Candidates will receive support for research-related expenses, up to $3,000 per academic year. Postdocs will be required to work full-time, fulfilling responsibilities related to in-person participation. The work location for this position is in-person on campus at the Princeton University Art Museum.
When teaching, successful candidates will carry the additional part-time rank of Lecturer, and any teaching opportunities are subject to sufficient enrollment and the approval of the Dean of the Faculty.
These positions are not eligible for sponsorship of an H-1B visa requiring consular processing; other visa sponsorships (including H-1B visas not requiring consular processing) may be available, as appropriate.
Qualifications
PhD in art history or classical art and archaeology, or a related field, with demonstrated familiarity with the material culture from the ancient Mediterranean. Experience working with museum collections and developing compelling exhibition projects is preferred, as is familiarity with the history of archaeological excavations at Antioch. The position will also involve conducting archival research in Visual Resources at Princeton and collaborating with specialists.
Application Instructions
Applicants should apply online and submit a cover letter, CV, short writing sample, and contact information for three references.
DEADLINE: All materials must be received by 11:59 pm EST on January 17, 2027. This position is subject to the University's background check policy.
