Job Description

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately-held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast.

GMC is looking for a Senior Project Manager capable of overseeing all aspects of complex projects or a large number of projects assigned to them from initiation to close out in our Huntsville, AL office. The project oversight will include the various phases of planning, design, and construction of the specified project(s). Responsibilities include supervision and/or coordination of a team of professionals (PM/SP/Etc.) to ensure the project delivery is within budget, on schedule, compliant with regulations, meet department profitably goals, and provide client satisfaction.

Essential Job Duties

Project Delivery (60%)

  • Oversees Project Managers ensuring contracts remain on-schedule and within budget
  • Helps coordinate complex design concepts into functional project based on the Project Manager’s design concept to that project team.
  • Delegates project assignments to and assist with technical development of lesser experienced engineers.
  • Oversees progress of multiple concurrent projects
  • Uses reports and financial data to manage projects and team performance and implements corrective measures as needed
  • Leads preparation of contract documents, reports, amendments, change orders and project modifications as project progresses.
  • Sets / Develops project scopes, budgets and schedules and manage projects as assigned.
  • Responsible for accuracy of technical aspects of projects.
  • Signs and seals technical reports, construction plans, and other documents as needed.
  • Solves complex and novel assignments requiring new or improved techniques or procedures.
  • QA/QC
  • Executes cross discipline checks and coordination.
  • Reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Recognizes and reports risk management issues to Department Management and Legal Department as appropriate.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Company, clients, vendors, and contractors
  • Interacts with executive-level government or public officials and/or executive-level private clients on significant project matters
  • Provides, and ensures Project Managers provide, regular, routine, and ad hoc updates on project scope/schedule/budget to clients, staff, subconsultants, and public agencies
  • Evaluates project performance and metrics and provides report to Market/Practice Leaders
  • Maintains knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in practice area
  • Works overtime and/or outside standard business hours including weekends as needed to meet deadlines or attend meetings, conferences, or trade shows
  • Conducts project cost analysis, estimating expected costs for the project; prepares and implements project budget based on estimates; reviews direct report PM’s project financials and draft invoicespersonnel management (25%)
  • Leads project team to complete assigned projects on time, to specifications, and with accuracy and efficiency
  • Creates an inclusive work environment where all team members are respected and engaged; builds collaborative relationships with team through participation in team building activities
  • Holds project team accountable; provides frequent constructive and timely performance feedback and provides performance input to Managers for their team members’ performance review and development goals
  • Communicates regularly with Project team individually and as a group
  • Promotes a culture of appreciation and gratitude by timely recognizing employees for outstanding performance, achievement, or effort; coordinates with Market Leader and Human Resources to provide spot, service, and other rewards and recognition items in a timely manner
  • Identifies training needs and career goals of team members and collaborates with employees and Human Resources to develop career goals/path and identify training resources

Business Development (15%)

  • Communicates and collaborates with marketing teams to provide written updates and photos on project status and upon completion for use in social media, marketing material, and SOQ’s
  • Seeks and participates in opportunities to network with current clients and/or potential hires to promote the Company through: 1) speaking engagements at conferences, trade-shows, professional associations, and schools; 2) drafting and submitting articles for publication in industry magazines and newsletters; and 3) drafting and posting articles and updates on social media
  • Promotes the Company during meetings and interactions with existing clients while seeking opportunities to secure additional work
  • Identifies opportunities and recommends actions to improve market share by driving sales with existing customers
  • Updates and maintains an accurate CRM database of the project pipeline
  • Identifies opportunities and recommends actions to drive repeat business through client satisfaction
  • Assists the marketing team with the development of proposals including scope, schedule, project information and statement of qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Experience/Knowledge

  • Minimum of 10 years of directly related experience
  • Proficient client service skills and the ability to effectively manage and enhance existing client relationships
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the ability to manage change, take measured risks, and influence decision-making
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with clients and employees at all levels
  • Ability to analyze and interpret project financial information and standard financial reports and initiate and drive corrective actions to meet project budgets
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize a variety of tasks under competing deadlines
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with a wide range of audiences from entry level to senior management
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills and strong knowledge of appropriate engineering, project management, spreadsheet, and word processing software and the ability to quickly learn new software programs

Education/licensure/certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • PE License or related professional licensure
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Travel expectation: 25-50%, including driving to project sites in varying weather conditions physical demands
  • Occasional work outdoors at project sites
  • Requires inspections, surveys, and evaluations of construction environments
