Job Description
Job Title: Plant Production Scheduler
Position Summary
The Plant Scheduler is responsible for planning, coordinating, and optimizing production schedules to ensure customer orders are produced safely, efficiently, and on time. This position serves as the primary liaison between Customer Service, Sales, Estimating, Production, Purchasing, Inventory Control, Shipping, and Plant Leadership.
The plant scheduler manages the facility’s order book, equipment capacity, and material flow to sequence printing presses, die-cutters, and folder-gluers. This role balances high-mix, short-run retail packaging demands with on-time delivery goals while minimizing setup waste and downtime.
Key Responsibilities
Schedule Creation: Build and release daily, weekly, and monthly master production schedules that align plant capacity with customer demand and targeted lead times.
Production planning and scheduling: work order release; capacity planning; material coordination; customer delivery management; schedule recovery planning; ERP maintenance; KPI reporting; cross-functional communication.
• Sequence jobs to maximize efficiency and reduce make-ready/setup times. Balance machine, labor, and material constraints. Monitor schedule attainment and adjust priorities as business conditions change.
• Modify Schedules dynamically to account for machine downtime, maintenance events, material shortages, or rush orders.
• Evaluate bottlenecks, labor loading, equipment utilization, and available capacity. Recommend overtime, outsourcing, or rescheduling solutions when needed.
Customer Service & Communication: Partner directly with the Accounts Services Representatives, Sales, Shipping, and production departments to communicate commitment dates and manage order changes. Provide status updates, communicate risks to delivery commitments, and coordinate recovery actions for critical customer orders.
Clear Direct communication to deliver capacity updates and manage expectations under pressure.
Inventory & Materials: Review material availability, coordinate with purchasing, and prevent shortages that impact production flow.
Continuous Improvement: Support Lean efforts, KPI tracking, ERP optimization, process standardization, and workflow improvements.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred. 3-5 years of manufacturing scheduling, planning, supply chain, or operations experience. Strong ERP/MRP and Excel skills.
Understanding of paperboard grades, printing/finishing parameters, and plant workflow constraints.
Competency: Analytical thinking, attention to detail, urgency, teamwork, decision making, communication, customer focus, and adaptability.
KPI’s: On-time delivery, schedule adherence, throughput, machine utilization, labor efficiency, WIP inventory, service levels, and lead time performance.
Physical Requirements: Work in both office and manufacturing settings. Frequent plant floor interaction. Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use standard office equipment.
