Client Controller

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Client Controller based in the United States.

This role combines technical accounting expertise, financial analysis, and high-touch client relationship management.
You will serve as a trusted financial partner, helping organizations understand both their financial results and the story behind the numbers.
Working between accounting operations and strategic financial leadership, you will provide oversight, guidance, and meaningful insights across multiple client engagements.
You will review financial statements, analyze trends, develop budgets and forecasts, and support cash flow and financial planning activities.
The position also offers the opportunity to mentor accounting professionals and contribute to process improvements and client-specific projects.

Accountabilities
  • Review monthly close activities and financial statements prepared by Client Service Managers to ensure accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance, constructive feedback, and mentorship to Client Service Managers, supporting their development and strengthening the quality of client deliverables.
  • Analyze financial results to identify trends, variances, unusual activity, risks, and opportunities, translating complex findings into actionable insights for clients and senior financial advisors.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication, responsiveness, and a deep understanding of each organization's operations, priorities, and financial needs.
  • Review and present financial statements to clients in a clear and accessible manner, helping them understand their financial performance and its implications for their organizations.
  • Lead the preparation of detailed client budgets and forecasts while supporting ongoing forecasting, cash flow analysis, and financial planning activities.
  • Manage multiple client engagements, priorities, deadlines, and deliverables while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and client service.
  • Support client onboarding by establishing accounting processes, coordinating systems and QuickBooks Online integrations, and helping clients adopt relevant processes and technologies.
  • Collaborate with senior financial advisors on financial analysis, planning initiatives, grant reporting, cash flow projects, and other client-specific assignments.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting and client service processes, coordinate with external tax providers and auditors when needed, monitor engagement scope, and contribute to broader accounting initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required; CPA or MBA is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in public accounting, client accounting or advisory services, or another comparable multi-client accounting environment.
  • Expert-level knowledge of QuickBooks Online, including integrations and connected applications; QuickBooks Online certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with detailed budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and presenting financial results to clients.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency with cloud-based accounting and business technologies, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new systems.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple client engagements and competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience working successfully in a remote environment, balancing independent ownership with effective collaboration.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and client relationship management skills.
  • Working knowledge of tax matters relevant to client accounting and financial reporting.
  • Nonprofit accounting and audit experience is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the confidence to investigate financial issues, identify opportunities, and communicate recommendations clearly.
