Heavy Equipment Operator / Class A CDL Technician

Location: Regional Travel
Job Type: Full-Time Hire with Benefits
Schedule: 40 hours guaranteed weekly; significant overtime (60+ combined regular/OT hours per week on average)
Availability: 24/7 emergency response, including weekends and holidays
Pay: Starting at $26/hour; higher starting rates may be available based on experience. Hours worked outside Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM are paid at time-and-a-half. Per diem, hotel pay for travel, and layover pay may also apply.

Position Summary

We are looking for a Class A CDL driver with heavy equipment experience to support regional field operations involving railroad recovery, rerailing, equipment transportation, load transfers, and track maintenance.

This hands-on position combines commercial driving, heavy equipment operation, mechanical work, and physical field labor. Employees are responsible for safely transporting and operating equipment while supporting field crews and maintaining vehicles and tools in ready-to-use condition.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct DOT-compliant pre-trip and post-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment.
  • Safely transport tractors, trailers, machinery, materials, and other equipment to and from job sites.
  • Inspect loads and verify permits for overweight and oversized transportation.
  • Participate in daily work planning and safety briefings.
  • Load, unload, move, and stage equipment and materials for field operations.
  • Support rerailing, load adjustment/transfer, railroad car maintenance and repair, and track maintenance, repair, and construction.
  • Assist with crane and equipment assembly, inspection, setup, and operation.
  • Help rig chains, cables, and winches during recovery operations.
  • Operate equipment such as cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, rail-bound equipment, tractors, and skid-steer loaders, when qualified.
  • Use hydraulic tools, welding equipment, cutting torches, electrical tools, and common hand tools.
  • Monitor trucks and equipment to identify issues and maintain operational readiness.
  • Perform and document minor equipment and vehicle service; report major mechanical problems to the Shop Manager or Foreman.
  • Assist with crane and equipment disassembly and loading when field assignments are completed.
  • Reload equipment and materials and help clean and organize job sites.
  • Restock vehicles and equipment with required parts, components, and supplies after returning to the home base.
  • Sort and place scrap materials in designated areas.
  • Keep vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas clean, organized, and free of debris.
  • Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist other departments or divisions as needed to support operational requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a good driving record.
  • Experience in construction labor, field service, or another physically demanding role.
  • Ability to successfully complete required qualification, training, and safety programs.
  • Ability to respond to emergency service calls 24/7, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Preferred Experience
  • 3+ years operating heavy equipment, including backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, grapple trucks, rail-bound equipment, tractors, and skid-steer loaders.
  • Equivalent combination of training and practical experience will also be considered.
