Job Description:
As a Planning Intern, you’ll play a hands-on role in shaping the future of our city. Working under general supervision, you’ll provide essential planning support in your assigned area while gaining firsthand experience in the Comprehensive Planning Division.

This internship offers a chance to build your professional skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and see how planning decisions help create vibrant, sustainable communities.

Typical tasks, but are not limited to:

  • Project Support: Provide support to planning staff on various projects including the Deep Creek Area Plan, Western Branch Area Plan, and other comprehensive planning efforts.

  • Research and Analysis: Conduct research on land use, zoning regulations, and development trends. Analyze data to support planning initiatives and projects.

  • Community Engagement: Assist in organizing and participating in community meetings, workshops, and outreach events to gather public input on planning projects. Participation is schedule dependent.

  • Mapping and GIS: Utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to create maps, analyze spatial data, and support planning activities.

  • Document Preparation: Assist in the preparation of planning documents, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Administrative Tasks: Perform general administrative tasks such as data entry.



Required Qualifications:
Must be a college student in good academic standing, or a recent college graduate (i.e., within one year of graduation).

Special Instructions to Applicants:
Students will be limited to one internship per school year.

Fall 2026 internships begin on or after August 17, 2026. The length of the internship may vary depending on the student’s availability. The student may work up to 30 hours per week for a maximum of 360 hours.

Those participating in the Internship Program will be responsible for:
  • Providing their own transportation to and from work;
  • Arriving at the work site at the time designated by supervisor;
  • Performing the tasks assigned by supervisor;
  • Demonstrating honestly, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn;
  • Conform to the guidelines of the internship work site.
