CANOPY BRANDS – DIRECTOR OF BENEFITS AND WELLBEING
Canopy Brands is seeking a Director of Benefits and Wellbeing to lead the strategic design, financial oversight, compliance and administration of our health and welfare, leave and disability, retirement, and workers’ compensation programs. This role will serve as the company’s subject matter expert on these programs, partnering closely with the CEO, finance, leadership and vendors to drive benefits strategy, cost management, compliance, and employee engagement across our multi-location footprint.

WHAT THE ROLE DOES:
Health and Wellness Plans
- Lead strategy and execution for medical, dental, vision, life, disability, FSA/HSA, voluntary benefits, EAP, and wellness programs
- Owns initiatives supporting physical, mental, emotional, and financial well-being, aligned to engagement and healthcare cost management
Strategy and Plan Design
- Develop an integrated benefits strategy spanning health and welfare, retirement, wellness, and leave while coordinating with insurance broker
- Manage vendor, TPA, broker and consultant relationships, and lead renewals, RFPs and negotiations
- Partner on budgeting, forecasting and long-term cost modeling; hold vendors accountable for service and cost outcomes
- Ensure compliance with ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, Section 125, and applicable state mandates
Analytics and Reporting
- Analyze claims data, utilization, trends, and vendor performance to inform strategy
- Develop executive-level reporting on cost, participation, risk, and opportunity
Financial Wellness and 401(k)
- Lead retirement offerings
- Drive retirement readiness, financial education, and financial wellbeing initiatives
- Oversee SPDs, SBCs, Form 5500 filings, plan amendments, nondiscrimination testing and governance audits
Leadership and Collaboration
- Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, finance, payroll, safety, operations, and executive leadership
- Support mergers and acquisitions activity, workforce changes, and special projects impacting benefits and compliance
Employee Experience and Communications
- Design clear benefit communications, including open enrollment materials, FAQs, and education campaigns
- Serve as point of contact for benefit, leave or claim issues
Workers' Compensation, Leave and Disability Programs
- Partner with safety, operations, risk management, and TPAs to manage claims with a focus on cost control, compliance and employee experience
- Oversee return-to-work and modified duty programs, coordinating with disability management, FMLA, and ADA programs
- Oversee FMLA, ADA accommodations, parental leave, state and local leave laws, and military leave (USERRA)
THE BACKGROUND THAT FITS:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration or related field required
- 10 years minimum of progressive benefits administration or total rewards experience across multi-state (including California) or multi-branch organizations, including at least 5 years in a leadership role required, no exceptions
- Bilingual – English and Spanish required
- Experience with reference-based pricing medical benefits models
- Comprehensive knowledge of ACA, COBRA, ERISA, HIPAA, FMLA, ADA and related regulations
- Demonstrated experience managing benefits budgets, renewals, forecasting, and vendor negotiations
- Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and payroll/HRIS systems
- Remote position with required travel to companies across the US 25% of the time; specifically open enrollment periods
- Located in Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX preferred
