OVERVIEW
Thompson Rivers University, in partnership with the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT), is delivering a select cohort of the Master of Education program to members of the St’uxwtews (Bonaparte First Nation) and NVIT employees beginning Fall 2026. TRU is seeking an experienced academic developer to provide peer mentorship for instructors teaching in the program. This role involves working alongside the course instructors to Indigenize and decolonize Master of Education course materials, teaching practices, and assessments, as well as support effective delivery of a blended learning format. This is a highly collaborative role, requiring the Academic Developer to work closely with the TRU MEd Faculty Liaison, MEd Program Co-Coordinators, and NVIT and St’uxwtews representatives. Some travel to the NVIT campus in Merritt, BC, may be required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member to serve as the Academic Developer for the St’uxwtews and NVIT MEd Cohorts. The Academic Developer is responsible for assisting course instructors with designing culturally responsive curriculum that meets the Senate-approved course outlines while honouring Indigenous and decolonial epistemologies and pedagogies. One position is available for the first three semesters of the MEd program from September 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027. The Academic Developer will receive 1-credit per semester for a total of three credits.
Responsibilities include:
- To actively support faculty in Indigenizing and decolonizing the MEd curriculum and pedagogical practices through formal and informal individual and group consultations.
- To act as a resource for teaching and learning, including curriculum development and alignment, and assessment of student learning.
- To assist in ensuring MEd curriculum and instructional practices are in compliance with Senate and University policies.
- To support faculty in designing engaging, accessible, and culturally responsive online learning experiences.
- To support faculty in the ethical and pedagogically appropriate use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in teaching, learning, and assessment, consistent with University policies and principles of academic integrity.
- A PhD or EdD is required.
- A Bachelor of Education degree is required.
- Demonstrated successful post-secondary teaching in a teacher education program is required.
- Demonstrated expertise in faculty learning and development (academic development) and experience working in a postsecondary Teaching and Learning Centre is required.
- Self-identification as an Indigenous person (e.g., First Nations, Inuit, or Métis) and demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, histories, cultures, contemporary realities, and experience building respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities, as well as experience working in community is required.
- Demonstrated experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods is required (TRC CA 62); and, teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula is required (TRC CA 10).
- Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect is required (TRC CA 63).
