Job Description

Tax Lead

The Tax Lead will report to the Tax Associate Director and will be responsible for managing various projects and compliance needs that impact the Firms Tax Department worldwide. This individual will work with individuals across offices and at various levels throughout the Firm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage indirect tax (Sales & Use) compliance matters by reviewing workpapers, tax returns and issuing tax payments. Act as a contact for all the Firm's Sales & Use questions and stay abreast of indirect tax laws, ensuring indirect tax returns are filed in a timely manner;
  • Supervise and review the relevant information relating to the Firms tax compliance obligations, including personal property tax, gross receipts filings, information returns, insurance tax, foreign bank account filings, and other business returns;
  • Serve as a liaison between the Tax Department and other Firm departments, including Billing, Client Accounting, Conflicts & New Business, and Administration; field and independently resolve low- to medium-complexity tax inquiries, and escalate matters requiring advanced technical judgment to the appropriate team member;
  • Supervise international tax withholding and related compliance obligations, including coordination of filings and reporting requirements in applicable jurisdictions; monitor ongoing compliance requirements and liaise with external advisors as needed;
  • Manage the third-party tax return preparation programs, including for partners in jurisdictions where the partner is not resident or tax domiciled;
  • Manage the responses for inquires received related to Sales & Use tax audits; assist with other federal, international, state and local tax audits;
  • Research domestic and international tax reporting matters using IRS Tax Code, Tax Treaties, and other authoritative literature;
  • Prepare memoranda to document and communicate tax issues, including plain-language summaries for non-tax stakeholders;
  • Develop a strong understanding of Firm operations and the law firm industry, along with an appreciation for high quality customer service;
  • Other general accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and special project responsibilities, as assigned; and
  • Provide general administrative assistance as needed.

Education and/or Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelors and/or masters degree in accounting or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum five years of experience in a structured tax department (public or corporate)
  • Customer service oriented with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical skills within his/her professional background

Preferred:

  • Background in partnership, individual, and international tax
  • Experience working cross-functionally with billing, finance, or operations teams in a professional services environment

The target salary range for this role is:

$130,000 - $140,000 if located in Illinois

Salaries vary by location and are based on numerous factors, including, but not limited to, the relevant market, skills, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
