Job Description

Director of Technical Accounting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Technical Accounting based in United States.

This is a highly visible technical accounting leadership role within a remote-first, globally distributed environment shaping the future of digital finance. You will serve as a subject-matter expert on U.S. GAAP and guide the accounting treatment of complex, non-routine, and emerging transactions. The role combines deep technical expertise with strategic partnership across Finance, Legal, FP&A, Treasury, and business teams. You will play a key role in addressing accounting questions involving digital assets, blockchain-based products, M&A, financing arrangements, and new products. With direct exposure to senior leadership and external auditors, your work will influence accounting policies, controls, reporting, and business decisions. This is an opportunity to help build technical accounting capabilities in a rapidly evolving Web3 and fintech environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Research, interpret, and apply U.S. GAAP standards, including ASC 606, ASC 842, ASC 805, ASC 718, and guidance covering debt, equity, consolidation, and impairment, to complex company-specific transactions.
  • Evaluate and document accounting treatment for digital assets and crypto-related transactions, including holdings, token issuances, staking, and other blockchain-native arrangements, applying ASC 350-60 and other relevant guidance.
  • Prepare clear, well-supported technical accounting memos and position papers covering complex or judgmental matters, including new products, M&A transactions, financing arrangements, and other non-routine events.
  • Monitor emerging guidance from the FASB, SEC, and PCAOB, assess its potential impact, and lead the implementation of new standards through updated accounting policies and cross-functional processes.
  • Act as the primary technical accounting liaison with external auditors, leading discussions and resolving complex accounting matters efficiently.
  • Partner with Legal, Treasury, Revenue, FP&A, and business leaders to assess accounting implications of contracts, deal structures, strategic initiatives, and transactions before they close.
  • Support M&A activities from a technical accounting perspective, including due diligence, purchase accounting, and post-acquisition integration.
  • Develop and maintain the accounting policy manual, ensuring policies remain current, well documented, and consistently applied.
  • Assess internal controls over complex accounting areas and collaborate with Internal Controls and SOX teams to support effective control design and operation.
  • Present technical accounting matters and recommendations to senior leadership and, when appropriate, the Audit Committee.
  • Work closely with the Chief Accounting Officer and engage with industry working groups, standard-setters, and peer organizations on emerging accounting issues affecting digital assets and the broader industry.
  • Mentor and develop accounting professionals while strengthening technical accounting capabilities across the wider Finance organization.
  • Support SEC reporting, including 10-K and 10-Q disclosures related to technical accounting matters, as applicable.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, along with an active CPA license in good standing.
  • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience in public accounting, such as Big 4 or national firms, and/or technical accounting experience in industry.
  • Deep and current knowledge of U.S. GAAP, with demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and document complex technical accounting positions.
  • Strong understanding of SEC reporting requirements for public companies or equivalent experience with complex stakeholder reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain sophisticated accounting concepts clearly to non-accounting audiences.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and operate effectively in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Experience with digital asset or cryptocurrency accounting is preferred, including familiarity with ASC 350-60, token economics, DeFi, staking, and blockchain-native transaction structures.
  • Public company experience and direct interaction with external auditors are preferred.
  • Experience with M&A and purchase accounting is a plus, as is experience with accounting-related system implementations such as ERP or revenue systems.
  • Prior people-management or mentorship experience is preferred.
  • Experience in blockchain, Web3, or fintech environments is an advantage.
  • Candidates who do not meet every listed requirement are encouraged to highlight relevant transferable skills and experience.
Benefits:
  • U.S. salary range of $181,713–$261,727 USD, excluding bonus, equity, and other benefits.
  • Compensation for candidates outside the U.S., including Canada, EMEA, and LATAM, is determined based on location, experience, and skills and may differ from the U.S. range.
  • Remote-first, global working environment.
  • Opportunity to work on emerging accounting challenges within the Web3, blockchain, and digital asset ecosystem.
  • Exposure to senior leadership, external auditors, industry working groups, and emerging accounting standards.
  • Inclusive environment that values diverse backgrounds, perspectives, skills, and experiences.
  • Candidates may be required to complete background and identity verification checks, including employment, education, criminal record, and other checks as applicable.
