Our client is a U.S.-based e-commerce agency specializing in Shopify design, development, migrations, and growth for mid-market brands.
The company helps e-commerce businesses build, optimize, and scale their online stores by combining UX strategy, design, development, conversion optimization, and technical Shopify expertise. Projects include new Shopify builds as well as migrations from platforms such as Magento and BigCommerce.
The remote team includes project managers, designers, and developers who collaborate throughout each project, from storefront planning and UX strategy through implementation, QA, launch, and optimization.
The company values clear communication, ownership, accountability, attention to detail, and practical problem-solving, particularly designers who understand how to create strong e-commerce experiences within Shopify's capabilities.
About the RoleWe are looking for a Shopify UX Designer – Customizer Specialist who combines strong e-commerce UX thinking with hands-on Shopify implementation.
This is a UX-first role, but we're specifically looking for a designer who understands how to create beautiful, conversion-focused storefronts using Shopify's built-in capabilities rather than relying on fully custom-coded solutions.
You'll plan site structure, navigation, PDPs, collections, filtering, and overall user experiences, while also working directly inside the Shopify Theme Customizer using sections, blocks, metafields, and metaobjects.
You'll use Figma for style guides, wireframes, mockups, and designs that extend beyond theme capabilities. When custom development is truly necessary, you'll prepare clear specifications and collaborate with developers.
This is also a client-facing position. You'll present designs and recommendations, gather feedback, and help clients understand how to manage their Shopify stores after launch.
Why This Opportunity?- Combine Shopify, UX design, e-commerce strategy, and hands-on storefront configuration in one role.
- Work on real Shopify projects for established e-commerce brands.
- Own work from initial UX planning through final QA.
- Work directly with clients and present your recommendations and designs.
- Collaborate closely with project managers, designers, and developers.
- Develop deeper expertise in Shopify, CRO, Klaviyo, accessibility, and AI-assisted design workflows.
- Start with a paid trial period with the opportunity to grow into a longer-term engagement.
- Plan site structure, navigation, menus, mega menus, and page hierarchy.
- Create Web Style Guides in Figma, including typography, colors, buttons, and component styles.
- Conduct UX and CRO audits and translate findings into prioritized recommendations.
- Develop collection and filtering strategies, including product grouping, sorting, tagging, and filtering.
- Shape Product Detail Page (PDP) strategy, including buy-box layouts, product information, and cross-sells.
- Balance strong UX and visual design with what Shopify themes can realistically support.
- Stay current with Shopify updates, theme capabilities, e-commerce UX best practices, and emerging AI tools.
- Build and style homepages, product pages, collection pages, headers, footers, and content pages directly in the Shopify Theme Customizer.
- Work confidently with Shopify OS 2.0, sections, and blocks.
- Configure and manage metafields and metaobjects for structured content such as size guides, specifications, and FAQs.
- Create responsive desktop and mobile wireframes and mockups in Figma when requirements extend beyond theme capabilities.
- Configure and style Shopify apps for reviews, upsells, bundles, subscriptions, swatches, and customer support.
- Verify app embeds and integrations after theme changes.
- Design and build Klaviyo email templates and flows when required by individual projects.
- Perform QA across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
- Conduct basic accessibility checks, including contrast, alt text, and keyboard order.
- Identify early when a requirement goes beyond native Shopify capabilities and requires custom development.
- Prepare clear developer notes and handoff specifications.
- Collaborate with developers and project managers to ensure designs are implemented accurately.
- Own work from initial design through final QA rather than handing it off after the design stage.
- Participate in regular client meetings and present plans, designs, builds, and project progress.
- Walk clients through wireframes, mockups, and Shopify storefront configurations.
- Clearly explain UX decisions and recommendations.
- Gather client feedback and translate it into practical design or implementation changes.
- Create Shopify guides showing clients how to manage their stores after launch.
- Record short Loom training videos covering store updates and day-to-day management tasks.
- 2+ years of professional experience building Shopify stores using theme-store themes.
- A portfolio demonstrating Shopify storefront work is required.
- Portfolio should demonstrate hands-on Shopify Theme Customizer experience, not exclusively custom-coded or non-Shopify websites.
- Strong experience with Shopify OS 2.0, sections, and blocks.
- Hands-on experience using metafields and metaobjects in Shopify Admin.
- Strong Figma skills for style guides, wireframes, and responsive mockups.
- Experience planning site architecture, navigation, collections, and filtering.
- Ability to conduct a UX audit and clearly explain recommendations.
- Strong understanding of e-commerce UX, mobile-first design, visual hierarchy, and typography.
- Ability to design attractive storefront experiences within the practical capabilities of Shopify themes.
- Working knowledge of WCAG accessibility fundamentals.
- Strong professional spoken and written English.
- Confidence leading client-facing meetings and presenting design recommendations in English.
- Ability to create clear written documentation and record short training videos.
- Reliable availability during agreed U.S. business hours.
- Strong organization, ownership, responsiveness, and attention to detail in a remote environment.
- Experience with Klaviyo, including flows, templates, and signup forms.
- Experience with Shopify apps such as Rebuy, Judge.me, Okendo, Yotpo, Recharge, or Gorgias.
- Basic Liquid and/or HTML/CSS knowledge.
- Experience with A/B testing or Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO).
- Experience supporting Magento-to-Shopify or BigCommerce-to-Shopify migrations.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted design tools and incorporating AI into design workflows.
Success in this role will be measured by your ability to:
- Create polished, conversion-focused Shopify storefront experiences.
- Combine strong UX thinking with practical hands-on Shopify execution.
- Use Shopify's Theme Customizer effectively rather than unnecessarily relying on custom development.
- Build intuitive site architecture, navigation, PDPs, collections, and filtering experiences.
- Use metafields and metaobjects effectively to support scalable storefront content.
- Deliver high-quality Figma designs that translate effectively into Shopify.
- Identify technical limitations and communicate them early.
- Provide developers with clear and actionable handoff documentation when custom development is required.
- Deliver consistent quality across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
- Communicate confidently with clients and incorporate feedback effectively.
- Own work from initial strategy through final QA.
- Competitive compensation of $1,400–$2,200 USD/month.
- Fully remote opportunity from Latin America.
- Flexible U.S. working hours, with schedules that can fall anywhere between Eastern and Pacific business hours based on team needs.
- Flexible PTO, including holidays in your country plus additional paid time off.
- Work on real-world Shopify projects for established e-commerce brands.
- Combine UX, Figma, Shopify, CRO, and e-commerce strategy in one role.
- Work directly with clients and collaborate with experienced designers, developers, and project managers.
- Continue developing your expertise across modern Shopify themes, apps, Klaviyo, accessibility, and emerging AI tools.
- Opportunity to begin part-time and grow into a larger, long-term engagement.
A portfolio is required for this position. Candidates should be able to demonstrate Shopify storefronts they have personally designed and/or configured using the Shopify Theme Customizer.
Portfolios consisting primarily of custom-coded websites or non-Shopify work without demonstrated Theme Customizer experience will not be a strong match.
This is a UX-first Shopify role, but candidates must also be comfortable implementing high-quality storefront experiences using Shopify's native tools. Strong Figma, Theme Customizer, metafields, metaobjects, and client-facing English skills are essential.
The company prefers to begin the engagement part-time and gradually ramp up, although an exceptional candidate may be considered for full-time work from the beginning.
The initial engagement typically includes a 2–3 month paid trial period. As part of the selection process, portfolios will be reviewed first, and final candidates may be invited to complete a paid trial project.
Candidates must be able to provide reliable coverage during agreed U.S. business hours. The team can accommodate schedules within the range of 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Eastern Time through 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Pacific Time.
This is a remote/telecommute position.
