About This Position

Parks and Recreation/Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park - Employee in this position will serve as the Superintendent at Beartown State Park, Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, and the Greenbrier River Trail. Under the direction and guidance of the Watoga State Park Superintendent, employee is responsible for the management, operation, maintenance, and protection of all the following facilities at Beartown State Park on 110 acres: 1-mile boardwalk with interpretive signs, vault toilets, and parking lot; Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park facilities on 287 acres include on-site museum with battle-related artifacts, picnic areas with rentable shelters, historic markers, playground, hiking trails, and observation tower; and Greenbrier River Trail facilities include the 77-mile trail with hiking/biking/cross-country skiing, designated trailside campsites, and vault toilets. Employees are guided by statements of policy and outlined assignments from the Watoga Superintendent and the DNR Parks central office to help ensure business-like, efficient, and responsible management. Due to the expanse of areas, employee will be required to exercise considerable discretionary judgement and initiative in planning and directing facility programs in the areas of building maintenance, equipment maintenance, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, sanitation, public relations, law enforcement, personnel management training, programmed visitor activities, historical and nature interpretation, conservation, preservation, public work programs, federal and state regulatory compliance, accounting, recordkeeping, revenue production, budget preparation/control, concession contract administration, public safety, and all related endeavors. Must be capable of performing in hands-on capacity due to staffing limitations and inspecting completed work in all areas of operation. Makes recommendations and initiates repairs, maintenance, and/or renovations of structures, grounds, facilities, trails, fences, roads , and other features of areas. Employee may be assigned or directed to accept "off- facility" responsibilities or special assignments that will take the employee away from their principal area of assignment including technical research projects, special events, supervision of other facilities, statewide temporary managerial assignments, forest fire fighting, and law enforcement duties. Must be skilled in computer use particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Kronos, wvOASIS, and email programs. Employee must be able to handle and resolve both written and verbal guest complaints in a manner reflecting a positive image for assigned areas. Must have ability to use oral and written instructions in a clear and concise manner and to effectively prepare written reports and correspondence. Employee will learn basic State purchasing procedures and obtain a State Purchasing Card to facilitate operation of the areas. Employee must assist in supervision, training, and management of all personnel. Employee may be required to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer training and pistol qualification as established by DNR Law Enforcement Section. SNRPO trainees will be required to pass an initial background investigation, pre-employment polygraph examination, psychiatric evaluation, and physical examination. Employee will be required to live on-site in the superintendent's residence provided at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. Must be licensed or eligible to operate a motor vehicle in WV. Employee required to wear assigned superintendent uniforms. Employee will perform all related work as required or assigned. Regular attendance is a requirement of this position.

Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

OR

Substitution: Additional experience as described below may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience per thirty (30) semester hours of coursework.

AND

Experience: One (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience working at a park, in a natural resources related field, in the tourism or travel industry, or in the environmental industry.

Special Requirement: Must have a valid driver’s license. May need to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer training and pistol requirements as established by the Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section. May need to pass periodic firearms qualification. May need to pass an initial physical examination, psychological evaluation and a polygraph examination designed to determine applicant’s fitness for Special Natural Resources Police Officer enforcement duties.

Note: Four (4) years of professional experience and/or military service will be substituted for the specific (preferred) experience listed above.

Pay Differentials:

  • Park Superintendents who serve as Defensive Tactics Training Instructors in the Special Natural Resources Police Officer Program will receive a shift differential of $100 per month effective February 1, 2014 (SPB 2647).
  • Park Superintendents who are not provided an on-park residence will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month in lieu of housing effective June 1, 2012 (SPB 2601).
