About This Position

Position Summary

The Radiation Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing radiation therapy, ensuring their well-being throughout the treatment process. Responsibilities include:

  1. Patient Care:

    • Assess and care for patients before, during, and after radiation therapy sessions.
  2. Treatment Coordination:

    • Collaborate with the treatment team to plan and coordinate individualized patient care.
  3. Patient Education:

    • Educate patients and families on radiation therapy procedures, potential side effects, and self-care.
  4. Radiation Safety:

    • Ensure strict adherence to radiation safety protocols.
  5. Documentation:

    • Maintain accurate medical records using electronic record systems.
  6. Collaboration:

    • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated patient care.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education
  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) or an equivalent nursing degree from an accredited institution.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, with a focus on oncology nursing and preferably experience in radiation oncology.
Required Registration/License/Certification
  • Current and active RN licensure in North Carolina
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association is required at time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of radiation therapy procedures, side effects, and patient care protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with the treatment team, patients, and families.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to assess and prioritize patient needs and respond to emergencies effectively.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods during patient care and treatment sessions.
  • Manual dexterity for tasks such as administering medications and assisting patients.
  • Physical stamina to handle the demands of a fast-paced oncology care environment.
Working Conditions
  • Work primarily takes place in a radiation oncology department within the healthcare facility.
  • Exposure to radiation and adherence to safety protocols are essential.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented work environment with frequent interactions with healthcare professionals.
  • Regular working hours with flexibility based on patient needs and organizational requirements.
