Senior Editor at EWTN News Inc – Washington, District of Columbia

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Senior Editor is responsible for monitoring news, trends, current affairs and generating story pitches, writing stories weekly, assigning the stories to other writers, proposing and drafting editorials, participating in editorial team planning and contributing to strategy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Proactively pitches compelling, timely and relevant articles and interviews, demonstrating knowledge of current events, Catholic news and the Register’s audience.
• Collaborates with the editorial team to research, plan and write articles.
• Assigns articles to writers in consultation with the editorial team.
• Coordinates with writers to successfully provide scope of articles, identify possible sources, establish word count and deadlines and tracks assignment through to publication date, using proper workflow applications.
• Employs creative solutions to common story problems, such as trouble reaching sources, tight deadlines, lack of art, etc.
• Acts as the primary news editor for stories he/she assigns and as secondary editor for other articles as requested.
• Performs fact checks and implements Register, AP and CNS editorial style to articles.
• Contributes to editorial and opinion writing in the areas of planning and researching topics and drafting text, as requested.
• Meets assigned deadlines and keeps within given budget.
• Participates in daily and weekly editorial conference calls, providing insights into potential news coverage, story angles, and updating editors on assignments.
• Appear regularly as a guest on Register Radio and occasionally on other EWTN radio or television news programs; respond as needed, under the direction of the editor in chief, to other media requests.
• Assists in publishing news stories to the web and social media, as assigned.
• Synthesizes news articles from multiple pieces, or rewrites stories as directed.
• Attends events to cover assignments, keep abreast of industry trends and technologies, or to represent the Register.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum 7-10 years of experience in editorial field.
• Extensive knowledge of and faithful practice of Roman Catholic faith.
• Excellent writing, editing and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to follow standard journalistic practices, particularly accuracy, honesty and fairness.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work with sources, colleagues, readers and other stakeholders diplomatically.
• Understanding of the digital publishing process.
• Knowledge and application of AP Style and CNS Style.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment by prioritizing deadlines and meeting the demands so written copy is always accurate and original.
• Strong critical thinking, editing, writing and proofreading skills.
• Experience with MS Office, InDesign, Content Management Systems or other publishing tools.
• Familiarity with search engine optimization, Google analytics and social media platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to be a team leader, build relationships and communicate effectively.
• Flexibility on hours as necessary to meet deadlines.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or a related field of study
