Description
The Ophthalmic Technician will assist ophthalmologists in the care and treatment of adult and pediatric patients. Responsibilities include conducting diagnostic tests, collecting patient medical histories, maintaining exam documentation, and supporting clinical procedures. This position is key in ensuring efficient clinic flow, accurate patient records, and a high standard of care. The Technician is required to work in different offices in Falls Church, Fairfax, and Alexandria.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Take patient medical histories and conduct visual acuity screenings.
• Take measurements and document exam results.
• Conduct diagnostic testing for patients, including visual fields, OCTs, corneal topography, and A-scan ultrasounds.
• Maintain accurate and thorough medical history/records, patient information, ocular conditions, and treatment plans in EMR.
• Assist ophthalmologists during exams and procedures, including visual acuity tests, pupil dilation, and performing manifest refractions.
• Assist in administering eye drops, patching, and other preparatory tasks for pediatric patients as needed.
• Answer questions as directed by the physician. Guide pediatric patients and their families during procedures, helping to ease anxiety and foster a comfortable experience as needed.
• Complete appointment follow-up items, such as prescription refills, e-prescribing requests, etc., as requested by our physicians.
• Collaborate with the Front Desk and Admin teams to promptly schedule patient appointments and follow-ups.
• Ensure exam rooms are adequately stocked with supplies and patient forms by the end of the day, so they are ready to use the next day.
• Handle prescription requests from pharmacies and patients promptly.
• Operating, maintaining, and sanitizing ophthalmic equipment and instruments before and after procedures.
• Prepare rooms for minor procedures and assist physicians with those procedures, as requested.
• Respond promptly to patient inquiries from phone calls, messages, and/or our Patient Portal.
• Triage complex patient calls or in-person visits regarding eye problems.
• Maintain timely communication with the front desk and administrative staff for scheduling and follow-ups.
• Ensure exam rooms are fully stocked and equipment is sanitized daily.
• Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with pediatric patients
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment
• Proficiency with diagnostic ophthalmic equipment
• Accurate documentation and data entry skills in EMR systems
• Team-oriented with a flexible, cooperative attitude
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• At least 1 year of experience in an ophthalmic or optometric setting required
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred
• Completion of an accredited ophthalmic training program or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
• Experience with visual field testing and EMR systems is highly desirable
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to travel to all three office locations in Fairfax, Falls Church and Alexandria
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
• Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and assisting patients
• Manual dexterity to operate ophthalmic instruments
• Adequate visual and hearing acuity to perform duties and respond to patient needs
