The State University of New York Maritime College is currently looking for temporary personnel for this year's summer training aboard T.S. EMPIRE STATE.
The temporary personnel would provide classroom & lab instruction. Classroom and lab instruction includes but are not limited to hands on Refrigeration, HVAC and Electrical curricula and labs
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Deliver curriculum for basic understanding of applied subjects to include Refrigeration, HVAC, and electrical subjects to underclass engineers
- Assess student progress regularly, providing constructive feedback to enhance their understanding and skills
- Ensure all training activities adhere to safety standards and promote a safe learning environment for all participants
- Maintain detailed records of attendance, assessments, and participant progress throughout the program
- The ideal candidate must enjoy working with young people and passing on their experiences. It is possible the work assignments may change day by day throughout the Summer Sea Term appointment period.
The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets and flexibility is a requirement regarding daily scheduling of duties. Join us this summer as we travel and teach the next generation of engineers how to better understand their material via hands on learning
The Full Cruise appointment is anticipated to begin April 27, 2026 and ends July 20, 2026. However, you may apply and be considered for one of the following.
Cruise A Half: April 27, 2026 - June 09, 2026
Cruise B Half: June 10, 2026 - July 20, 2026
Full Cruise: April 27, 2026 - July 20, 2026

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Mechanical / HVAC / Refrigeration / Electrical or Marine engineering with strong mechanical knowledge
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching a professional subject matter
- Demonstrated efficient communication skills
- US Passport
- Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC) - will assist as needed in application
- Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) - Note: All applicants must have an MMC - will assist as needed in application
- Valid Medical Certificate - The Medical Certificate is issued with the original MMC; however it must be renewed every 2-years
Note that Drug Testing in accordance with Title 46 CFR 16.210 will be conducted Pier Side.
A COPY OF ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION MUST BE PROVIDED PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT. IF THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION IS NOT PROVIDED BY THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT YOUR APPLICATION CAN NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT. ALL DATES FOR US PASSPORT, TWIC, MMC AND MEDICAL CERTIFICATE MUST BE VALID FOR THE ENTIRETY OF YOURANTICIPATED APPOINTMENT.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in educational settings involving hands-on training or industrial environments
Additional Information:
Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification and experience. Meals are included. Travel expenses may be reimbursed on a case by case basis.
This is a temporary appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
