Salary: Range $3,250 to $3,500 monthly – commensurate with experience

Overview:

Receives orientation to professional archival and records management programs used in the Illinois State Archives; completes in-house training program consisting of professional level work experience in each of the Illinois State Archives program divisions; and attends and participates in formal training seminars, workshops and meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Receives orientation and training in policies and procedures used in the Illinois State Archives; learns procedures from professional employees engaged in Publications/Finding Aids, Illinois Regional Archives Depositories, Restoration Laboratory, Records Management (Local and State), and Accessions & Control, Reference, and Micrographic Services.
  • Conducts direct archival research and reference services for governmental agencies, scholars, attorneys, surveyors and the general public.
  • Attends and participates in training sessions, meetings, conferences, and workshops designed to enhance professional archival and records management techniques.
  • May be assigned to work on special projects or surveys requiring the development of research techniques to complete the projects.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience:

Requires possession of a bachelor’s degree, with major coursework in public administration, history, business administration, political science, library science, archival management or records management. Possession of credentials as a certified archivist or records manager is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Requires working knowledge of personal computer program applications such as database, spreadsheet and word processing.
  • Requires working knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and methods.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of research and reference techniques.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of acquisition, arrangement, description and indexing principles, methods and techniques.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of computerized archival or library techniques, systems and procedures.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of the organization and structure of state and local government and local and regional history.
  • Requires ability to adapt academic training to professional archival and records management work.
  • Requires ability to benefit from formal and on-the-job training and orientation.
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Requires willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license as required by the individual positions within the class.
  • Requires the ability to lift & carry up to 75 lbs.; push/pull up to 50 lbs.
