Our Observation RN’s play a key role in providing the highest quality of patient care while the patient is in at Union Health. 2WB at Union Hospital is an observation unit committed to delivering efficient, high-quality care for patients requiring short-term hospital stays (typically under 48 hours) for conditions including cardiac, stroke, and other medical concerns. Our team ensures exceptional patient outcomes through expert assessments, prompt interventions, and safe transitions of care.

This unit is led by Nursing Care Manager, Drew Horton. He has been with Union Health since 2018 and has been leading the unit since 2025.


Essential & valuable nursing skills gained on this unit:

  • Comprehensive patient assessment in an observation setting, including care of cardiac and stroke patients.
  • IV therapy, medication administration, stroke and post cardiac catheterization care, and telemetry monitoring.
  • Time management and prioritization in a fast-paced environment.

Unit Successes and Designation:

  • Consistently ranks among the highest in the hospital for discharges by 2 pm.
  • Strong patient satisfaction feedback related to communication and education
  • Team-driven improvements in discharge planning and care coordination.

Unit Culture:

  • 8-week orientation program for new graduates.
  • Supportive charge nurses.
  • Close-knit, collaborative team focused on growth and learning.

RN Job Details:

Essential Job Duties:

  • Collaborates with the physician or manager to determine needs of patients
  • Completes the routine physical assessment using common assessment skills in a systematic manner.
  • Contributes to plan of care for pre-defined patient problems.
  • Respects patients' rights, including the right to inform, privacy, confidentiality, and the right to refuse care.
  • Assists with patient education to promote self-care and patient independence.
  • Follows company policies and procedures and department protocols.
  • Assists the physician with special procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited ASN or BSN program
  • Must have Indiana RN license
  • Previous RN experience preferred

License/Certification:

  • BLS, ACLS, NIH certification
  • IN RN license
