About This Position

Description:

Summary:

This position is responsible for managing and servicing a moderately complex assigned book of business. This position requires specialized knowledge to effectively grow and maintain a profitable book of business, and will be familiar with, and use appropriate resources to perform portfolio underwriting/re-underwriting within designated level of authority. This position will evaluate new and current business to verify initial and continued acceptability and adequate rates, and ensure that Agents understand and adhere to the company underwriting philosophy and service expectations of our Members. This position will actively support and promote Goodville culture and its guiding principles of Love, Justice and Integrity. This position will support Goodville Mutual Group agencies to align strategies for effective growth and profitability of their books of business, and will collaborate with Marketing to build and train agency acumen. This position is expected to develop industry knowledge through the pursuit of insurance coursework and evolving product understanding, and will be viewed as a knowledgeable resource within the department.

Functions:

  • Evaluate moderately complex underwriting applications and policy change requests that are outside Goodville’s guidelines or best practices for personal, farm, or commercial lines.
  • Provide consultative advice to Agents regarding risk appetite.
  • Analyze related reports and other appropriate sources to determine acceptability of risk.
  • Review records and questionnaires to verify continued acceptability and rate adequacy.
  • Collaborate directly with Agent and Marketing to create strategies to improve Agent profitability and growth.
  • Analyze account and portfolio experience, claim and risk reports, rate adequacy and acceptability of occupancy and/or operation in order to prepare and evaluate change requests and renewal proposals.
  • Review risks and reports to determine appropriate action, including coverage modifications or termination.
  • Advise leadership and Agent of underwriting action to retain, modify or terminate risks where applicable.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with Agents, Marketing and other departments.
  • Act as a resource to Agents and their staff, answering questions and discussing risks.
  • Communicate with Marketing team regarding Agent issues or concerns.
  • Develop strategy to improve portfolio growth and profitability.
  • Participate in insurance-related education and develop knowledge of current industry trends.
  • Continue to develop an understanding of existing laws and regulations, emerging technologies, and competitor actions that can impact our members, our product offering, or our pricing.
  • Accompany territory Field Marketing Representative for agency visits to establish rapport with Agents and develop knowledge of assigned territories/ region(s).
  • Participate in the evaluation of Agents as directed.
  • Maintain / document Agent files for periodic review with management and/or Field Marketing Representative.
  • Advise Senior Underwriter(s) or management of issues or concerns.
  • Advise management and Agents regarding termination of unacceptable risks and accounts requiring facultative reinsurance cessions.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced underwriters and Assistant Underwriters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of insurance experience at the company or agency level with an in-depth knowledge of all related business lines required; or
  • Associate degree and four years related experience required; or
  • High school diploma or GED, and six years of underwriting experience at the company or agency level, with an in-depth knowledge of all related business lines required; or
  • High school diploma or GED, and successful completion of CPCU, CIC or PLCS designation and two years related experience required.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, and email software required.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Successful completion of the General Insurance program (INS 21, 22, 23) strongly preferred.
  • Successful completion of two parts of the following programs: CPCU, CIC, PLCS, AAI, API, AIC, AU, AFIS or ARM preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, travel to all organization offices (including in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Dakota) and travel to vendor work sites required.
  • Ability to work in an office environment with moderate noise level, remain in a stationary position and operate a computer a majority of the time required.
  • Ability to move throughout the office to access work materials and to move work materials weighing up to ten pounds daily required.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation required.
