Position Title: APRN- ED

Department: Emergency Department

Reports To: Chief Nursing Officer

Direct Reports: None

FLSA Classification: Exempt


Position Summary

The Emergency Department Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (ED APRN) provides fast-paced, high-quality care to patients across the lifespan on an acute, urgent to emergent basis. The ED APRN role involves rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with conditions ranging from minor injuries to life-threatening trauma. The ED APRN works in close collaboration with the emergency physician to enhance clinical quality, optimize patient throughput, and improve overall patient satisfaction. This role requires strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy while contributing to a team-focused care model.


General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive medical screening exams, histories, and physical assessments.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and emergent conditions across the lifespan.
  • Initiate and interprets diagnostic tests and procedures relevant to the patient's current status.
  • Utilize information obtained during the interview, examination, and diagnostic procedures to identify diagnoses.
  • Initiate treatment plans, prescribe medications, and provide patient education based on diagnosis.
  • Collaborate closely with the emergency physician to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care and consistent clinical standards.
  • Determine patient disposition (discharge, admit, transfer) and coordinate care transitions.
  • Communicates effectively in both the patient chart and orally with the staff so as to ensure that can be understood and executed by others as appropriate.
  • Communicate with an admitting Practitioner for patients being admitted to the Hospital.
  • Partner with physician leadership to develop and implement workflow improvements.
  • Actively participate in efforts to improve patient throughput, reduce wait times, and enhance overall department efficiency.
  • Recognize the diversity of the patient population and treat patients with courtesy and respect.
  • Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to provide quality care and service to patients.
  • Order appropriate consultations and effectively communicate with the consulting practitioner.
  • Perform procedures within scope (e.g., laceration repair, splinting, incision & drainage).
  • Respond to medical emergencies within the hospital (codes, rapid response).
  • Complies with all rules, laws, policies, procedures and regulations to ensure excellent patient care.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing Required


Certification/Licensure Requirements

  • Current IL APRN Licensure
  • Current IL DEA License Required
  • BLS Required
  • ACLS Required
  • PALS Required
  • ATLS Required
  • De-escalation Training Required within 6 months of hire


Experience Requirements

  • Nurse Practitioner minimum 1 year Preferred
  • Emergency Services care minimum 3 years Preferred


Computer Skills

  • Strong computer skills with the ability to navigate EMR programs
