About This Position
About the team:
South China Morning Post (SCMP) is looking for an Chief Editor to support the production of content for a fortnightly lifestyle magazine focused on personalities, culture, food and beverage, travel, design and architecture and more.
Purpose of the position:
As the Chief Editor, you will execute editorial direction and strategy for the publication for both print and digital, encompassing both sponsored and non-sponsored content. You will help lead a lean, dedicated editorial team to generate the non-sponsored content, maintaining the standards of the publication. You will work closely with SCMP’s team of inhouse staff and external contributors to ensure their work is of the highest quality for publication.
You will play a role in sharpening and honing the content direction and strategy, working with multiple stakeholders including art directors and the technology team to help shape the title’s print and digital channels.
In this role, you will:
Editing
- Oversee the editorial direction of the title.
- Manage content in the print magazine and digital website, ensuring the highest editorial standards are maintained. The publishing cadence of the title is fortnightly, but may be adjusted based on commercial needs
- Lead and motivate the editorial team in coming up with innovative, engaging and timely ideas for stories
- Maintain standards of journalistic excellence in terms of accuracy and fairness.
- Plan content according to the established style, editorial policy and publishing requirements.
- Edit content, ensuring that stories are well-written while respecting the voice of individual writers.
- Represent the company at industry events and build a relevant network of contacts.
Leadership
- Manage a pool of contributing editors, writers, production editors and freelance contributors to produce content for print and online.
- Work with the social media team to maximise the online exposure and presence of the content on social media networks
- Manage a budget to maximise resources to improve productivity.
Presentation
- You are the public face of PostMag, which may require you to present, moderate in public speaking roles in Hong Kong, in mainland China or around the world.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Degree holder with 10 years of relevant working experience in a reputable media company; experience in lifestyle journalism and of leading a print publication are a must
- Excellent writing, editing and copywriting skills
- Excellent grasp of cultural trends in Hong Kong, Asia and internationally.
- Project management experience across a number of complex publishing projects and the ability to manage projects independently
- In-depth understanding of magazine production cycles as well as a knowledge of publishing processes for digital content
- Able to multitask, prioritise and thrive in a strict deadline-driven environment
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Experience with managing budgets and understanding of project P&Ls
- Knowledge of written Chinese and fluent Putonghua are not essential but certainly advantageous
Work location will be at Causeway Bay office in Hong Kong
