About This Position

Job Summary

The IT Specialist I is an early-career, developmental role within the Technology Department. This position provides frontline technical support to students, faculty, and staff while participating in structured mentorship and hands-on learning across core IT operations.

Under the supervision of the Operations Support Specialist, the IT Specialist I will gain practical experience in help desk operations, troubleshooting, device deployment, and technology project collaboration. The role is designed as a structured apprenticeship, with increasing responsibility and autonomy over time.

Based on demonstrated aptitude, performance, and organizational priorities, the IT Specialist I may have the opportunity to contribute to project-based work aligned with their academic focus or professional interests (e.g., systems administration, cybersecurity, networking, infrastructure support, or educational technology initiatives).

This position is well-suited for candidates in the early stages of their technology careers and may serve as a pathway to future advancement within the department, depending on performance and institutional needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Help Desk & End-User Support
  • Respond promptly to end-user requests for technical assistance.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, network, and account-related issues.
  • Document help desk activity accurately within the ticketing system.
  • Escalate complex issues appropriately while maintaining communication with users.
  • Progressively assume responsibility for ticket resolution from intake through completion.
2. Technology Operations & Projects
  • Assist with device deployment, system configuration, and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Support technology initiatives and departmental projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with members of the Technology Department to improve service delivery and user experience.
  • Contribute to documentation and process improvement efforts.
3. Professional Growth & Development
  • Participate in mentorship and ongoing skills development under the guidance of the Operations Support Specialist.
  • Engage in professional learning opportunities relevant to IT operations.
  • As appropriate, contribute to focused project work aligned with academic coursework or professional interests.
Qualifications
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot common hardware and software issues.
  • Ability to thoughtfully use artificial intelligence tools to assist with troubleshooting, research, and workflow efficiency is preferred but not required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and developing technical skills in a collaborative environment.
  • Foundational knowledge of IT systems, networking concepts, or cybersecurity principles is preferred but not required.
Education and Experience
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university program related to information technology, computer science, information systems, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a help desk, technical support, or customer service role is preferred but not required.
Additional Information
  • Collaborate with the Technology Department and other campus stakeholders.
  • Attend relevant meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Evening work may occasionally be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

This position may require lifting objects up to 50 pounds and moving throughout campus to provide in-person technical support.


Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $59,886 - $65,275 (non-exempt, salary) based upon experience and education.
