About This Position

Description:

Supports FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request processing by conducting initial reviews, performing searches, drafting response materials, and applying exemptions under supervision. Contributes to workflow efficiency, accuracy, and timely completion of tasks.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct initial request reviews and clarifications under guidance; assist with routing and coordination.
  • Perform records research and support responsive record searches, compile results for review.
  • Apply redactions and exemptions under supervision; prepare draft response materials and correspondence.
  • Update the FOIA Request Tracker and maintain supporting documentation of work performed.
  • Participate in VA daily updates and required FOIA training; implement feedback promptly to reduce error rates.
Requirements:

Required

  • Associate degree.
  • 1+ year FOIA request processing experience within the last 24 months.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
  • Proficiency with standard office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn eFOIA tools quickly.
  • Ability to conduct effective internet and records research to support FOIA search and review activities.
  • Must be local to DMV. Primarily remote with occasional on sites in DC.
  • Must be able to obtain VA access (background investigation) and a PIV badge; must sign NDA.

Preferred

  • FOIA-related training and familiarity with basic FOIA exemptions. (Additional FOIA experience may substitute for FOIA training.)
  • Experience with scanning, file organization, and records research techniques.

What success looks like (first 60–90 days)

  • Completes VA onboarding, system access, and required training; demonstrates command of the team’s SOPs and templates.
  • Produces accurate work products in the eFOIA system and maintains real-time tracker accuracy for all assigned actions.
  • Meets timeliness and quality expectations (clear, error-free correspondence; well-documented exemptions/redactions).
