Job Overview:

The Director of Clinical Nutrition provides strategic and operational leadership for the clinical nutrition program across all settings of CSH (inpatient rehab, long term care units, and outpatient). This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of nutritional care, ensuring that services meet the complex medical, developmental, and psychosocial needs of children with unique and chronic health care needs. The Director leads a team of registered dietcians and collaborates closely with medical, nursing, therapy, and food services departments to deliver evidence-based, family-centered nutritional care that supports optimal health and long term outcomes. The Director demonstrates both analytical and creative approaches to management of complex patient care and serves as a clinical resource, mentor and consultant for multidisciplinary staff. Direct clinical services are provided as needed.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Nutrition or Dietetics from an accredited college or university
  • Registered Dietitian with Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist CDCES certification
  • American Heart Association BLS Provider Certification
  • Five years experience in clinical nutrition working with children with complex and chronic disease which includes one year clinical experience in acute care pediatrics and one year clinical experience in rehabilitative or community pediatrics
  • At least 5 years of experience working with children with diabetes
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written English communication skills and interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.

Preferred:

  • Supervisory experience

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • Registered Dietitian with Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist CDCES certification
  • American Heart Association BLS Provider Certification

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Full-Time
  • 40 hours/week

Essential Functions:

  • Clinical Nutrition:
    • Plans, organizes, directs and supervises Clinical Nutrition activities. Develops and administrates Clinical Nutrition department budgets according to hospital guidelines. Ensures that adequate staff, space, equipment and other resources are available to provide department services
    • Hires and evaluates department staff according to Hospital policies and procedures. Responsible for new staff orientation and ongoing competency. Updates job descriptions
    • Assures that all clinical staff deadlines are met. Coordinates departmental performance improvement projects. Develops, revises, evaluates and implements departmental policies and procedures
    • Motivates staff to continuously improve their performance and encourages in them a sense of ownership of their work and of the performance of the department. Provides opportunities for staff input and participation in the operation and direction of the department.
    • Develops, implements and updates departmental and Hospital policies and procedures to guide and support the provision of high quality nutritional services that are family focused and compliant with regulatory and accrediting agencies including American Diabetes Association (ADA) and The Joint Commission (TJC). Ensures care meets patients' cultural and religious needs as medically possible. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team in integrating and communicating nutrition care principles
    • Ensures excellence of evaluations, education, treatment recommendation and discharge planning through periodic review and monitoring of documentation
    • Coordinates affiliations with Dietetic Internship programs
    • Manages a clinical caseload as needed
    • Maximizes potential of self and staff by supporting professional growth. Promotes an environment that embraces knowledge, innovation and improvement
    • Provides relevant educational opportunities for multidisciplinary team members
    • Participates in and may lead Hospital performance improvement projects. Reports quality metrics. Coordinates outcomes and research initiatives for Nutrition and Chronic Illness Diabetes Management programs
    • Participates in staff meetings, task forces, and multidisciplinary meetings
    • Facilitates project maintenance required for the upkeep of grant funding intended to support patient quality improvement initiatives
  • Chronic Illness Diabetes Management Program:
    • Contributes to inpatient and outpatient chronic illness programmatic development; plays a key leadership role in maintenance and development of the diabetes management program
    • Provides direction in the care of children with diabetes and contributes to the care of children with other chronic conditions including education to patients and caregivers. Assists with the development and maintenance of educational materials for patients and caregivers
    • Serves as quality coordinator for Diabetes Self-Management Education & Support (DSMES) service; responsible for the maintenance of all required records for ADA DSMES certification and coordinates DSMES recertification
