The Phlebotomist is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely collection of blood and other specimens in a Family Medicine clinical setting. This role supports high‑quality patient care, efficient clinic operations, and compliance with FQHC and New York State Article 28 regulations. The Phlebotomist works collaboratively with providers, nursing staff, and front office teams and utilizes the Epic electronic health record to ensure proper documentation, specimen tracking, and workflow coordination.
Duties / Responsibilities1. Specimen Collection & Patient Care- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection for patients of all ages, including newborns, infants, children, adolescents, and adults
- Demonstrate age‑appropriate techniques to ensure patient comfort and cooperation
- Properly identify patients and specimens in accordance with clinical and regulatory standards
- Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and privacy during specimen collection
- Prepare specimens for transport, processing, and testing according to laboratory protocols
- Recognize and respond appropriately to adverse reactions and escalate to licensed staff when needed
- Support clinic flow by coordinating specimen collection with provider schedules
- Collaborate with nursing staff, providers, and medical assistants to ensure timely and accurate completion of lab orders
- Perform blood collection using sterile technique following infection control, laboratory, and organizational policies
- Ensure proper specimen labeling, packaging, and handling to maintain integrity
- Prepare and secure specimens for lab pickup and transport, following chain‑of‑custody and temperature requirements when applicable
- Maintain phlebotomy supplies and notify leadership of inventory needs
- Assist with room turnover and environmental safety/infection prevention tasks as needed
- Document specimen collection accurately and timely in the Epic electronic health record
- Verify lab orders, labels, and order statuses in Epic
- Use Epic workflows to ensure specimens are correctly tracked and resulted
- Adhere to all FQHC, Article 28, HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control regulations
- Follow procedures for specimen handling, disposal, and exposure prevention
- Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and competency assessments
- Maintain patient confidentiality and protect all sensitive information
- Report documentation or order discrepancies to clinical leadership
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Current nationally recognized Phlebotomy Certification required
- Minimum of 3 years phlebotomy experience, preferably in primary care, Family Medicine, or multi‑specialty settings
- Epic EHR experience required
- Experience in an FQHC, Article 28, or similar regulated environment preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively with diverse populations
- High attention to detail and accuracy
