Position Overview

The Building Maintenance Technician I is responsible for performing basic maintenance, repair tasks, and preventative maintenance throughout the hotel. This role supports the Building Facilities Department by responding to guest requests, assisting with routine inspections, and ensuring building systems operate safely and efficiently. Building Maintenance Technician I is an entry-level position ideal for individuals beginning their career in hotel maintenance within a full-service property.

What You'll Do

General Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform basic maintenance tasks including replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, resetting equipment, and completing small repairs.
  • Assist with minor electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and mechanical tasks under direct supervision.
  • Respond promptly to guest room maintenance calls and service requests.
  • Support upkeep of public spaces, back-of-house areas, and hotel facilities.

Preventative Maintenance Support

  • Assist with routine preventative maintenance tasks on guest rooms, equipment, and building systems.
  • Help complete checklists, inspections, and logs according to schedule.
  • Monitor for and report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or needed repairs.
  • Support higher-level technicians during major inspections or repairs.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all hotel safety procedures, OSHA guidelines, and department policies.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, storage spaces, and mechanical rooms.
  • Use tools, equipment, and chemicals safely and appropriately.
  • Report unsafe conditions or malfunctions immediately.

Team Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicate work order status, delays, or needed parts to supervisors.
  • Collaborate with Housekeeping, Front Office, Food & Beverage, and other departments.
  • Support senior technicians and the Engineering Supervisor or Director as requested.
  • Participate in training sessions and departmental meetings.

Guest Service

  • Interact professionally and courteously with guests when servicing rooms or public spaces.
  • Ensure minimal disruption and provide service with a focus on guest satisfaction.
  • Follow proper procedures for entering guest rooms and handling guest requests.

Inventory & Tools Support

  • Assist with monitoring inventory of tools, supplies, and materials.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of tools and equipment.
  • Support department in receiving and storing maintenance items.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with emergency response including power outages, leaks, and equipment failures.
  • Support special projects, seasonal tasks, or deep cleaning initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support hotel operations.
  • Maintain reliable and consistent attendance as an essential function of the role.

What You'll Bring

Required Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Previous building maintenance or repair experience preferred.
  • Experience in a hotel, residential, or commercial maintenance setting preferred.
  • Certifications or training in basic maintenance trades preferred.
  • Familiarity with tools, equipment, and basic repair techniques preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing knowledge.
  • Ability to learn and follow maintenance procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, bend, kneel, and work on feet for extended periods.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively.

Other Qualifications

  • Professional appearance and adherence to grooming standards.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in the Engineering field.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
