Department Overview

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides innovative, quality care for cosmetic and plastic surgery needs while simultaneously training surgeons to become experts in the field. Its faculty are specialists in their practice, including breast reconstruction, hand surgery, pediatric cleft and craniofacial surgery, gender affirming surgery and microsurgery. The team of plastic surgeons sponsors a six-year integrated plastic surgery residency program, a hand surgery fellowship program and, together with the Department of Urology, a gender surgery fellowship program.

This is a one-year Clinical Instructor position within the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University, designed to support high-volume microsurgical services while maintaining access to reconstructive and body contouring care across OHSU and affiliated clinical sites, including Hillsboro Medical Center (HMC). In this role, the individual will function as a fellow with progressive autonomy, participating in all aspects of patient care including pre-operative evaluation, operative management, and post-operative care for patients seeking microsurgical and super microsurgical reconstruction. The fellow will report directly to the fellowship director, who will coordinate mentorship-guided clinical experiences and ensure a structured, individualized learning approach throughout the appointment aligned with professional development goals. In addition to microsurgical responsibilities, this role includes dedicated operative coverage at Hillsboro Medical Center, supporting panniculectomy, body contouring, and related reconstructive procedures to maintain patient access, address an existing surgical backlog, and optimize utilization of available operative capacity. This position will further support the general reconstruction and acute care plastic surgery practice at OHSU including taking faculty call. The position involves close collaboration with faculty across the Division within a multidisciplinary care model and is structured to provide both advanced clinical training and meaningful contribution to patient care delivery, while supporting the Division’s academic mission through teaching, conference participation, and scholarly activity.

Function/Duties of Position

• The fellow will gain significant operative experience in microsurgical reconstruction, including complex oncologic, traumatic, and lymphatic reconstructive cases.
• The fellowship experience is structured across key areas of microsurgical training, including Head & Neck, Breast, Lymphedema, and Extremity reconstruction.
• The fellow will be actively involved in flap selection, pre-operative planning, and execution of microsurgical techniques, including end-to-side anastomoses, management of large vessel size mismatch, artery-to-vein graft anastomoses, hand-sewn venous anastomoses, and handling of vessels less than 1.5 mm in diameter (super microsurgery).
• Approximately 1 day per week will be spent in the outpatient setting evaluating new and established patients in clinic.
• Approximately 4 days per week will be dedicated to operative experience across OHSU and affiliated sites, including participation in high-acuity microsurgical cases and independent operative cases appropriate to level of training.
• Participate in all phases of patient care, including pre-operative planning, intraoperative management, and post-operative follow-up, with progressive autonomy appropriate to level of training.
• Provide dedicated operative coverage at Hillsboro Medical Center, including panniculectomy, body contouring, and related reconstructive procedures, supporting patient access and operative efficiency (2-3 operative days/month).
• Attend weekly Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery teaching conferences and participate in Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conferences.
• Participate in multidisciplinary collaboration as part of comprehensive patient care.
• The fellow participates in the education and training of medical students, residents, and the regional medical community.
• The fellow will take general plastic surgery call at OHSU and/or affiliated community partner hospitals approximately 3–4 days per month and one weekend every two months.
• Engage in clinical research, presentations, and scholarly activity as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

• M.D.; Completion or anticipated completion of ACGME accredited Plastic Surgery Residency. Board Eligibility in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

• Demonstrates the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, remain organized, and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
