About This Position

Description:

Basic Function: Instructs special education students in a classroom setting. Prepares lesson plans and instructional materials designed to meet the needs of individual students. Evaluates and monitors student's performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts Educational Evaluations/Screenings on children.
  1. Select and administer appropriate evaluation measures.
  2. Interpret evaluation results.
  3. Write an evaluation report, including suggested long-term educational goals and submit the report to the appropriate person.
  4. Make recommendations for type of education program
  • Provide an educational program to appropriate children.
  1. Evaluate individual educational needs of students. Maintain communication between the school and the parent in the development of the Individual Education Plan.
  2. Responsible for the development of appropriate educational goals.
  3. Develop an appropriate Individual Educational Plan (IEP) to include: objectives, long and short in behavioral terminology, methods and materials; time schedules, related services, present level of performance, and evaluation methods and criteria.
  4. Develop appropriate curriculum.
  5. Develop and implement daily lesson plans consistent with each child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  6. Monitor the progress of each student’s educational development.
  7. Change or develop the educational program to meet student’s needs.
  8. Write reports specific to the format needs of the student/agency e.g., evaluations, annual progress reports, IEP’s.
  9. Write discharge summaries upon termination of education program
  • Shall be responsible to provide indirect consultative services when appropriate.
  1. Interact responsibly, appropriately, and in respect of confidentiality toward parents of student, professionals and other individuals involved in student’s welfare.
  2. Serve as the leader of a transdisciplinary team to design, implement and evaluate a total educational program for each student.
  • May provide home visit services to student when appropriate.
  • Responsible for supervision and classroom training of Teacher Aides.
  • Maintain current knowledge of appropriate educational theory and practice through professional reading and participation in professional conferences and in-services as well as receiving supervision.
  • Shall be responsible for the health and safety of their students in the Program.
  • Responsible for the environmental maintenance of equipment and accountable for environs.
  • Responsible as a member of the Education Department to:
  1. attend appropriate staff meetings.
  2. maintain daily/monthly attendance records.
  3. compile and submit monthly statistics.
  4. follow-up with parents/caseworkers/physicians by appropriate communication.
  5. to participate in offsite screenings.
  6. to plan and conduct in-services.
  7. to be involved in a public awareness program.

Additional Functions

  • Other duties as assigned by Education Director or designee.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures and promotes a safe workplace. Insures that clients/students/program participants receive services in a safe environment. Insures department/classroom/program staff adhere to safety policies and procedures. Reports any potential unsafe conditions to area Vice-President, VP Facilities, or Safety Committee Chairman. Is accountable for prevention of accidents and injuries in their department.
  • Follows current policies and procedures regarding compliance with privacy, security and corporate compliance policies. Be thoroughly familiar with department and program specific policies and procedures.

Performs job responsibilities in a safe manner and reports any potentially unsafe conditions to supervisor. Shall be responsible for the health and safety of their students in the Program.

Requirements:

Qualifications: MS/BS in Special Education, New York State Certification in Special Education or BA/BS with teacher license working toward master’s degree.

Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to work with children with differing degrees of functioning. Be professional in appearance, attire, attitude and communication, Ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment; or work independently without close supervision, Ability to communicate effectively with others using oral and written methods, Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment when engaged in crisis intervention.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Environment: The noise level is usually moderate to loud.
