Summary

The Machinist is responsible for operating machine tools to produce precision metal parts. Produces small batches or large quantities of metal parts. Ensures products meet precise specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Employee must be able to perform these essential functions of the position satisfactorily and, if requested, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job, absent undue hardship.

  • Operates machine tools such as saws, lathes, milling machines, and grinders to produce metal parts.
  • Reviews electronic or written blueprints or specifications for a job.
  • Calculates where to cut or bore using a measuring device.
  • Marks the workpiece to show where cuts should be made.
  • Determines how fast or slow workpiece is fed into machine.
  • Determines how much material to remove.
  • Selects tools and materials for the job.
  • Plans the sequence of cutting and finishing operations.
  • Changes out tooling and saw blades as needed.
  • Positions workpiece on the drill press, lathe, or milling machine.
  • Monitors and control feed rate and speed.
  • Ensures workpiece is properly lubricated and/or cooled.
  • Detects problems by listening for specific sounds.
  • Adjusts cutting speed to compensate for harmonic vibrations.
  • Monitors the accuracy of cuts.
  • Replaces dull cutting tools.
  • Checks accuracy of work against blueprints and specifications.
  • Complies with all safety and hazardous material procedures, wears protective equipment as required to meet or exceed OSHA and company requirements.
  • May provide training to other employees on machining, assembly, inspection and/or test procedures.
  • Maintains all aspects of work place cleanliness and organization.
  • Ability to use and read measuring tape, calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools.
  • Ability to do Setups and create Setups on new jobs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintains accurate records.
  • May be required to drive forklift trucks and operate other metal working machinery, overhead cranes and lifts.
  • May be required to obtain additional training or certification.
  • May provide assistance to other departments, as needed.
  • May be required to participate in Small Group Improvement Activity Teams, daily Team Meetings and Team Exercise sessions.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvements and submit in accordance with Continuous Improvement Program.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with the requirements of the company’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System (when required).

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend and kneel on a regular basis.
  • Regular manual dexterity/coordination: hand/eye movements, motor control.
  • Regular visual effort: concentrated reading of documentation or close viewing of computer displays.
  • Ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down; not performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
  • Works in a factory environment with exposure to noise, chemicals, heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Able to push, pull and lift up to 50lbs. on an occasional basis.

Potential Hazards

  • Employee may be exposed to hazardous substances including a variety of petroleum- based products, cleaning solvents, etc. on a regular basis.
  • Employee may be exposed to sharp (cutting) tools on a regular basis.

Required Education/Experience/Skills

  • High School graduate, or equivalent, plus a minimum 3-5 years as Machinist and/or Mechanical Assembler experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

  • 2 Year Degree in a related Vocational Field of Study.
  • Experience performing welding, mechanical and electrical system assemblies.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations Required/Preferred

  • CNC, Manual or Precision Machining Certification desired.
