GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Leads and behaves according to Potbelly Values and upholds the Potbelly Way. The District Manager provides leadership, coaching, and direction to the shops through people development.
District Manager I- responsible for 4 or fewer locations. They personally manage one shop with the support of an Assistant Manager. In this role, they are responsible for the results of this shop (see GM Job Description) and they provide leadership, coaching and direction to the remaining shops through people development.
District Manager - responsible for 5 or more locations. They do not personally manage any shop location.
They lead to improve shop operations and to maximize the long- term sales and profit of each shop. The DM will plan and set goals for each shop, monitor the progress of goals (turnover, customer metrics, sales, profits, food cost) and hold employees accountable for delivering results through coaching. Follows the standard Potbelly Operating Procedures with main areas of focus including but not limited to:
FOCUS
People
- Must ensure each shop has a great General
- Continuously develop and train General Managers to the next
- Must develop bench at every level from Shift Leader to District
- Coach and develop General Managers on staffing, scheduling, turnover, employee satisfaction, performance management, training and orientation, communication, rewards and recognition and a
- 40% of time must be spent on executing people processes and coaching teams.
- Coach General Managers on conducting and implementing performance reviews and development
- Conduct GM performance reviews and provide continuous feedback and development. Hold the team
- Build strong Identify staffing needs. Participate in recruiting, selecting, development and placement of all Managers, Shift Leaders, and Catering Coordinators.
- Knows how to and routinely identifies internal talent and sources/recruits external talent.
- Educate shop management on all appropriate personnel policies, labor laws, tool use, and safety and security Ensures compliance at the shop level.
- Hold effective monthly meetings with General Managers for goal
- Act as communication liaison between Support Center and
- Effectively utilize Field Support Team (OPS Services, HR, TA, Training, Facilities)
Customers
- Ensure all GMs hire nice people and teach them the Potbelly Way.
- Hold team accountable for excellence in product quality, consistency and execution, speed of service, shop cleanliness and maintenance and customer service.
- Analyze, address, and improve results of the customer feedback
- Audit shops to ensure they meet identified operational standards, facility standards, food safety standards, and labor
Sales
- Develop the annual business plan for the District to drive in-shop and outside of the four walls sales.
- Increase comp sales and deliver budgeted sales each period.
- Ensure shops properly execute marketing promotions and new product roll-outs.
- Lead successful new shop openings.
Profit
- Must know how to improve financial results. Must be an expert in labor costs, food costs and
- Meet financial and operational goals. Provide and implement Games plans. Motivate and support shop management teams to execute those plans.
- Use all information resources available (e.g., balanced scorecard data, customer feedback, turnover reports, P&L) to identify opportunities and threats. Optimize shop potential and accordingly adjust business plan tactics.
- Complete various audits to ensure that shops meet Potbelly policies, procedures and tool use standards.
PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
- Must have the ability/stamina to work a minimum of 50 hours a

- Ability to manage several fast-paced, high-volume, customer-focused shops through organization and coordination of schedules, supervision and counseling of employees, problem-solving, maintaining cleanliness, execution of marketing plans and providing great customer service.

- At least 5 years of proven leadership experience, managing multiple units preferably within a rapidly growing retail or restaurant organization.
- Proven track record of delivering results in a complex, fast-paced
- Demonstrated leadership capability to build strong teams and to achieve business
- Ability to relocate to other markets,
- All District Managers are required to maintain a valid, approved Food Safety Manager Certification for the jurisdictions they operate in. Recertifications must adhere to the jurisdictional requirements and standards. Should they fail to pass the certification requirements after two attempts, they will be not be qualified to continue to perform in a management team member
- Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
