About This Position

PAY: $14.35 - $22.00 (10 OPEN POSITIONS)

General Purpose of Position in this Classification:

The Environmental Health Intern assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of environmental health programs and initiatives. The role focuses on conducting field inspections, analyzing data, supporting research, and helping with community outreach related to environmental health issues.

Essential functions:

  1. Fieldwork and Inspections
  2. Participates in environmental inspections for local businesses, water sources, and public health facilities.
  3. Assists in identifying health hazards in environmental settings and recommends corrective actions.
  4. Community outreach and education
  5. Aids in the development of educational materials for community awareness about environmental health risks and best practices.
  6. Supports community workshops and presentations on environmental health topics such as pollution control and waste management.
  7. Helps in the dissemination of health advisories to local residents and businesses.
  8. Policy support and regulatory assistance
  9. Assists in monitoring local, state, and federal regulations concerning environmental health and ensures compliance with relevant laws.
  10. Helps with tracking environmental health trends and policy changes to provide recommendations for improvements in local programs.
  11. Administrative support
  12. Helps with office tasks, such as preparing reports and organizing program files.
  13. Assists with scheduling meetings, field visits, and other logistics related to environmental health projects.
  14. Professional development
  15. Attends professional training, workshops, and conferences to enhance knowledge of environmental healh topics and current industry standards.
  16. Gains hands-on experience in the application of environmental health laws, policies, and public health initiatives.
Requirements:

Essential knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  1. Has a degree, or is currently pursuing a degree, in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  2. Be knowledgeable of, or has the ability to learn, environmental health laws, policies, and regulations
  3. Be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
  4. Be sensitive to the importance of maintaining confidential records and information.
  5. Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Springdale residents, volunteers, other outside organizations and agencies, as well as the other City of Springdale officials, and the general public.
  6. Be able to perform mild physical labor activities from time to time as they relate to patient care and the setup of health department activities.
  7. Be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook.
  8. Able to identify, interpret, and implement public health laws, regulations, and policies related to specific programs.
  9. Be willing to engage in community education and advocacy around environmental health issues.
  10. Able to use media, advanced technologies, and community networks to communicate public health information.
  11. Be willing to consider and respect the point of view of others, while promoting the expression of diverse opinions and perspectives.
  12. Able to interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, as well as persons of all ages and lifestyle preferences.
  13. Collaborate with community partners to promote the health of the community.
  14. Be able to perform field inspections, including outdoor activities and sample collection.
  15. Be able to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
  16. Be able to learn about and stay updated on emerging environmental health issues.
  17. Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  18. Be comfortable working in both office and field environments, including handling health-related equipment and tools as necessary.
