Purpose of the Role:
The CDL-A Lead Transportation Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and operational readiness of the company’s commercial trailer fleet through skilled mechanical, electrical, and welding maintenance. This role prioritizes maintenance needs, manages parts inventory, supports team and subcontractor work, and may operate commercial vehicles as needed to support transportation operations.

In this role, you help ensure the company’s transportation equipment operates safely and efficiently by quickly identifying and resolving maintenance issues using mechanical, electrical, and welding skills. Your ability to prioritize repairs, maintain parts inventory, and coordinate work with technicians or subcontractors helps minimize downtime and keep operations running smoothly. By maintaining high equipment standards and providing backup delivery support when needed, you play a key role in supporting reliable transportation and overall operational success.
Position Summary:
The CDL-A Lead Transportation Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and operational readiness of the company’s commercial trailer fleet through skilled mechanical, electrical, and welding maintenance. This role performs and oversees repairs and preventative maintenance on framed dump trailers, frameless dump trailers, and walking floor trailers, while prioritizing and reporting maintenance needs to support efficient transportation operations. The position also manages maintenance inventory, coordinates with or directs subcontractors when necessary, and collaborates with other maintenance technicians on assigned projects. As needed, the Lead Transportation Mechanic may also operate commercial vehicles to deliver loads in support of transportation activities, leveraging their CDL-A certification to maintain operational continuity and support overall fleet performance.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on commercial trailers, including framed dump trailers, frameless dump trailers, and walking floor trailers.
  • Repair and maintain trailer components such as tarp systems, tarp poles, lighting, and structural elements.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and structural issues and complete necessary repairs using appropriate tools, welding, and electrical skills.
  • Prioritize, track, and report maintenance issues to ensure equipment safety and operational readiness.
  • Maintain and monitor maintenance parts and supply inventory and coordinate replenishment as directed.
  • Work collaboratively with other maintenance technicians on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with and/or direct maintenance subcontractors when work is performed on site.
  • Operate commercial vehicles to deliver loads on a backup basis when needed and when properly certified with a CDL-A.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and regulatory requirements related to equipment maintenance and transportation.
Qualifications:
  • Valid CDL-A (Commercial Driver’s License – Class A)
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems, trailer lighting, and wiring
  • Welding experience and ability to perform basic structural repairs
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and equipment issues and complete repairs efficiently
  • Ability to manage maintenance inventory and coordinate parts replenishment
  • Basic understanding of preventative maintenance practices for transportation equipment
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with technicians and subcontractors as needed
Physical Demands:
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb on and around trailers and equipment.
  • Lift, carry, and move tools, parts, and materials up to 50 pounds; heavier items may require assistance or equipment.
  • Use hands and arms regularly to operate tools, perform welding, complete electrical work, and handle mechanical repairs.
  • Work in outdoor and shop environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Tolerate exposure to loud noises, dust, grease, and moving vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Maintain good vision and hand–eye coordination to safely perform maintenance tasks and operate equipment.
  • Occasionally operate commercial vehicles when supporting transportation operations.
