Description:

Mt. Olive Pickle Company is seeking a Production Superintendent to oversee all day and night shift operations at our DC manufacturing facility, driving performance, product quality, and workforce engagement. This is a pivotal leadership role for someone who thrives in demanding production environments and is ready to guide teams, optimize processes, and maintain smooth, reliable operations.

Plans and directs the activities directly and/or indirectly through subordinate Supervisors connected with all Cutting, Packing, Pasteurizing, Capping and Finished Goods activities on perspective shift(s).

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Plans and directs the activities directly and/or indirectly through subordinate supervisors connected with all Cutting, Packing, Pasteurizing, Capping and Finished Goods activities on assigned shift. Assures that schedules are met, product quality is high and department operating costs are as low as possible. Analyzes, recommends and assists in developing and implementing production methods, standards, records and reports. Works closely with Continuous Improvement Manager and Maintenance Department personnel on repairs and downtime/waste reduction.
  • Serves as senior management person on site during assigned shift. Has strong dotted-line relationships with other departments on site during this shift. Assists supervisors and employees from departments such as Warehouse and Distribution, Human Resources, Quality Control and Outside Production as needed.
  • Assures all employee safety, food safety and food quality rules and regulations are followed. Communicates same to subordinate supervisors and employees. Assures that subordinate Supervisors and employees are properly trained and are performing their duties in these areas.
  • In the event of this employee’s absence, management-level duties related to food safety and food quality will be assumed by the General Manager.
  • Keeps informed daily of production schedules, recommending changes as needed to same. Takes necessary actions to remove difficulties in meeting schedules. Evaluates each shift’s activities to determine if they are conforming to production standards, (quality and quantity). Implements changes or alternatives as needed. Evaluates efficiency of operations. Makes several walk-throughs of all departments several times during shift. Assesses operating efficiency and problems. Provides guidance and feedback to aid supervisors.
  • Assists in development of and responsible for execution of annual budget, including but not limited to expense and capital budgeting, planning, inventory (asset & product), cost controls, revenue and productivity objectives.
  • Applies knowledge and techniques to generate continuous improvements in production in the areas of safety, quality, delivery and cost. Researches and recommends improved methods to achieve maximum levels of productivity.
  • Meets regularly with subordinate supervisors to cover schedules and activities as they pertain to each department. Coordinates departments to avoid unnecessary downtime and maximize productivity. Monitors and reviews work of supervisors.
  • Actively participates in efforts to ensure safety, raise quality, improve efficiencies, reduce cost, and meet delivery. Includes but not limited to new equipment projects, quality improvement efforts, cost reduction efforts, new product development, and throughput improvements.
  • Furnishes information for billing glass companies for inferior glass.
  • Ensures completion of required departmental daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly tasks.
  • Purchases or approves the purchase of operating supplies for areas supervised. Regularly reviews departmental expenses to ensure budgetary compliance.
  • Maintains appropriate computerized and paper records and files on pertinent information.
  • Maintains areas of operation in a safe and sanitary manner. Makes effective use of and makes recommendations on physical assets. Determines that established safety rules, Company policy and good housekeeping are followed.
  • Contribute to the creation, implementation, and management of Lean Manufacturing Principles, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance.

Other Duties

  • Performs some duties of subordinate supervisors in absence of same.
  • Coordinates with other departments to assure cooperation and timely completion of projects. Communicates and cooperates with other members of management to maintain productive and harmonious working relationships.
  • Drives own or company vehicle in performance of some job duties.
  • May represent company at outside meetings and events.
  • Performs some duties of subordinate supervisors in absence of same.
  • Ensures proper selection, training, evaluation, and discipline of and communication with employees.
  • Participates in training, employee meetings, committees, project teams, etc. as appropriate.
  • Receives written and verbal instructions on the above job tasks and performs other duties as directed by Supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Exercises normal supervisory functions of up to 4 subordinate Supervisors and approximately 200 hourly employees.

Personal computer, standard office equipment, own or company vehicle.

Physical Demands

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures: transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Regular office and plant conditions.

Requirements:

While a four-year degree is preferred, a minimum of 3 years’ demonstrated manufacturing experience is required for this role. Additional technical or specialized training, including successful completion of Acidified Foods GMP School. Strong working knowledge of automated equipment, process based production and discrete production. Solid mechanical skills a plus. Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills. Business math skills required. Proficiency with personal computer and standard business software plus specialty software required. Working knowledge of applicable laws, rule, and regulations (Federal, State, EEOC, ESC, FDA, OSHA, etc.), with strong background in OSHA regulations. Must speak, read and write in English. Must demonstrate aptitude to manage people, set example by own conduct and work habits, make prompt and competent decisions, use authority wisely and maintain discipline, morale and teamwork at high standard.
