About This Position
Packaging Supervisor
The BC Packaging Supervisor manages the day to day packaging operations of our Brooklyn Center plant, ensuring all products are packaged as scheduled while meeting all material and quality specifications in coordination with Production Manager and Sr Operations Manager. This includes hiring, training and managing the packaging team to meet production schedule in addition to developing, implementing and maintaining all standard operating procedures and training to produce quality, consistent and stable packaged products for Surly and our co-packing clients with a mindset of continual improvement. The Packaging Supervisor must enjoy managing people and processes, have an entrepreneurial spirit and be proactive in driving the business forward.
This is a salaried position - pay range is $68-71k. The position will be eligible for our full benefit package, including health and welfare, time off, and beer hall discounts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensure a safe work environment and a culture that embraces safe work habits, understanding of the risks, compliance with regulations, and prioritizing corrective action of any identified safety hazards and risks.
- Facilitate the scheduling of all packaging operations in cooperation with the VP of Production, Production Manager, and Sr Operations Manager including CIPs/cleaning, Canning, Kegging, Bottling, and Repack.
- Facilitates the scheduling and management of all packaging staff to meet the requirements of the production schedule as determined VP of Production, Production Manager, and Sr Operations Manager
- Facilitates the scheduling of and executes as able the preventative and corrective maintenance with the Sr Operations Manager, Facilities/Maintenance staff, and trained operators.
- Maintain materials and chemical inventory based on production schedules/forecasts.
- Maintain equipment and operating systems to ensure proper working conditions and schedule preventative maintenance as needed with Production Mechanics.
- Ability to perform and troubleshoot all functions of the Packaging Department.
- Collect and report quality data at the direction of the Sr Operations Manager and Quality Manager.
- Report, evaluate and interpret packaged beverage quality daily, including analytical results, process consistency, and flavor as appropriate. Implement changes to improve processes, beverage flavor and consistency as directed by the Sr Operations Manager and Quality Manager
- Develop, implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and training with support from the production management
- Assist in the hiring and training of all new Packaging staff based on the pre-determined skill set and experience required.
- Implement methods to educate your team on beverages, quality management, and problem solving as directed by VP of Brewing Ops and Sr Operations Manager
- Implement corrective action plans as needed to ensure all brands match the established quality standards as directed by the VP of Brewing Ops and Sr Operations Manager
- Ensure that Production areas are clean and organized at all times.
- Ensure Packaging Staff have the tools, knowledge and equipment required to do their jobs.
- Ensure responsible use of packaging materials by reducing process loss throughout the packaging operations as directed
- Ensure all operations are compliant with FDA GMP regulations and general food safety requirements

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
- A working knowledge of OSHA requirements and a proven track record of focus on building a safety culture
- A working knowledge of FDA GMP compliance requirements
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, OBeer
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks and handle multiple projects
- Able to stand for long periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per day) performing job with and around moving machinery
- Strong Working knowledge of beer and beverage packaging equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of progressive experience in a manufacturing facility, with 3+ years in a packaging brewery
- GED or High School Diploma.
- Formal Brewing Education.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise and mentor the packaging team
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position operates around a ‘mostly' traditional schedule in a Production environment, but can require long hours and evening/weekend work when the demand calls for it. Participation at relevant brewery and other company events is assumed.
