Department Overview

The OHSU registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The RNs care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics and meets the standards/expectations of the OHSU Nursing Professional Practice Model. In that model, the RN demonstrates the professional role obligations of scientist, leader, practitioner, and knowledge transfer. Professional accountability enriches the RNs engagement as a leader in promoting an inter-professional culture of collaborative decision-making, innovation, life-long learning, and teamwork.

The nurse in this position will provide comprehensive care to neurology patients in an ambulatory setting, including Stroke and Multiple Sclerosis as well as provide cross coverage of other neurologic conditions. The Registered Nurse provides complex care coordination, extensive phone triage and focused disease-specific patient education.

Department of Neurology Clinical Operations Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30am – 5:30pm

This position schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 hrs each day

Hybrid position, variable between on site and remote (after completion of probationary period) with on site split between South Waterfront and Hatfield Research Center.

Function/Duties of Position

The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The Clinical RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics. The Clinical RN demonstrates the professional role obligations of scientist, leader, and knowledge transfer or [Onsomble Model of the Professional Role™].   • Responds to acute illness using assessment skills and technical skills and immediately activating medical support as needed
  • Documents in Epic all care provided, phone advice given, teaching provided
  • Thoroughly documents all nursing activities according to compliance guidelines and on the same day that care is provided. Records medication start and stop times to ensure appropriate billing. Documents clearly and thoroughly so knowledge of patient’s condition and any psychosocial factors are clear to the next care provider.
  • Coordinates care during the assigned day with all members of care team including , physicians, advanced practice professionals (APPs), social workers and other subspecialties
  • Anticipates the needs of patients and families. Conducts anticipatory guidance teaching about behavioral and symptom management, medication management, grief, ect. Assesses psychosocial and physical needs of the patient during all interactions. Engages appropriate team members to support the family throughout their experience.
  • Takes an active role in planning the workflow of clinic and in a way that maximizes use of rooms and staff and values the patient’s time. Proactively plan follow up visits, look ahead to schedules to help maintain the balance of patients to resources. Actively participates in quality improvement activities

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year Neurology RN experience
  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon and Washington State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.

  • Strong analytic skills; demonstrated organizational skills; demonstrated problem solving skills; demonstrated communication skills both interpersonal and conflict resolution including fluency in oral and written English; demonstrated planning skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary setting; Intermediate computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use the Electronic Health Record information and tools.


Preferred Qualifications
  • BSN preferred for all current OHSU employees
  • Previous experience with Epic EMR.
  • Previous experience in Ambulatory Nursing.

Additional Details
  • Length of Orientation – Experienced Nurse External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week. Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
  • Ability to alternate between various work sites, depending on the departmental needs. .
  • Able to prioritize tasks.
  • Able to multi-task with frequent interruptions and frequent changes and fluctuations.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time with extensive computer work.
  • Able to utilize office equipment within work area, including computer, soft phone, smartphone.
  • Comfortable working in a shared office environment.
  • Constant exposure to usual hospital environmental conditions including possible exposure to blood and body fluids for which staff is provided education and protective equipment to minimize risk.

Ability to lift, bend, stoop, reach, carry, push, pull and walk throughout the work period. Must be able to use all senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and speaking. Able to lift 35 lbs. OHSU provides reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities.

This position requires frequent intervals of walking significant cumulative distances (i.e. escorting patients to rooms, transporting specimens/supplies to other buildings, etc.) standing for long periods of time, and bending. Ability to lift or help position (using correctly learned body mechanics) patients weighing up to but not limited to > 200 lbs. with or without assistance. The work environment carries risk of exposure to human tissue/fluids and radiation. Ability with or without reasonable accommodation corrective lenses and/or hearing aids to use the senses of seeing (including color vision ability), hearing, touch, and smell to make correct judgments regarding patient conditions and safely administer care. Use of all hospital approved clinical equipment. Significant use of computers, copiers, multi-line phones, and fax.
