Medical Lab Scientist Lead

Work hours: Monday - Thursday, 9:00pm - 7:30am

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford is a 296-bed, acute-care facility serving Northeast Tarrant County since 1973. With more than 550 physicians on its medical staff, hospital services include outpatient surgery, women's services, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, a dedicated oncology unit and cardiac rehabilitation. Texas Health HEB recently received a dual accreditation as a Cycle IV Chest Pain Center and Heart Failure Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, is certified as a Primary Stroke Center and a designated "Baby Friendly" facility by WHO and UNICEF. Here's What You Need
• Bachelor's Degree required. Medical Technology, Applied Technology, Clinical Lab Science or Chemical, Physical or Biological Science preferred.
• Individuals hired as a CLS II/CLS Lead prior to January 3, 2010, will be grandfathered to the MLS Lead position with existing education.
• 4 years' experience/ and training in a medical laboratory required.
• 2 years leadership experience highly preferred.
Licenses:
• MLS (ASCP) or MT (ASCP) required upon hire
• AMT, AAB, HHS, NCA, HEW, CLS- CA, FL, NY state license, Philippine Board of Technical Technology required upon hire
• M (ASCP) - Microbiology if working in Microbiology required upon hire
• BB (ASCP) - Blood Banking if working in Blood Bank required upon hire.
Skills:
• Strong positive interpersonal skills.
• Ability to read, write and speak English clearly.
• Problem solving ability, time management skills.
• Possess organizational skills to function successfully in a fast-paced work environment.
• Computer literate in Word, Excel, or other databases.
• Administrative skills to compile statistics and maintain logs.
• Ability to multitask.
• Preferred: Experience with Cerner Millennium LIS.
What You Will Do
• Maintains a working knowledge of continuous improvement and applies concepts and processes to the satisfaction of all accrediting agency requirements for the section:
• Assists bench technologist in solving QC and technical problems
• Reviews, evaluates and oversees corrective action for monthly QC
• Proficiency testing.
• Oversees distribution, reviews returned results, completes corrective action as needed
• Prepares reports for Clinical Pathologist as needed
• Participates on CI and Process Improvement teams
• Documents review for selected result and/or maintenance logs, billing programs, etc.
• Adheres to CAP checklist requirements
• Performs ongoing and periodic review of policies and procedures as defined by the Laboratory regulatory agency and revises as needed for compliance
• Participates in yearly CAP checklist (interim and 2 year)
• Delegate proficiency testing and review results if required by entity
• Assumes bench duties as scheduled
• Evaluates workload and assists as needed
• Research new methods and systems
• Assists in technical troubleshooting
• Meets continuing education requirements
• Prepares and/or assists in bench, daily, weekend and holiday schedules
• Makes adjustments for workload, maintenance and unscheduled workflow problems
• Maintains all requirements for MLS job code
• Complies with safety, infection prevention, continuous improvement and continuing education programs:
• Adheres to section, laboratory, hospital and system guidelines, procedures and policies
• Models compliance behavior in all regulatory requirements
• Provides documentation for annual review
• Maintains HIPAA requirements at all times
• Provides leadership and communication links between the technical staff, the nontechnical staff, the managers and the laboratory director:
• Provides problem solving expertise and leadership skills in technical training, information systems and workload problems and issues
• Exhibits written and oral communication skills
• Participates in student and employee training and orientation as needed
• Assists in HR activities as directed by the supervisor, manager or director
• Acts as laboratory leadership in the absence of Director, Supervisor or Manager
• Payroll activities as needed
• Participates in leadership activities and continuing education
• Models good work habits to include attendance and productivity
• Activates appropriate procedures for downtime and oversees recovery as necessary
• Creates and oversees scheduling if required by entity
• Models THR Leadership Behaviors and exemplifies professional accountability
• May assess ongoing competency
• Participates and fulfills project assignments, facility changes, new methods or instrument implementation:
• Participates in budget preparation
• Manages supplies, reagent inventory, costs and section charges
• Participates in writing of new procedures and/or installation of new instruments including computer testing and documentation
• Participates on interdisciplinary teams
• Participates, as directed, in the development and/or maintenance of information system files and applications as required by the laboratory and section/cost center:
• New application testing
• File maintenance and/or testing in the LIS/HIS
• Program development or maintenance
• Manages resources within the guideline of the section/cost center budget and productivity indicators:
• Provides information for budget preparation
• Participates in the evaluation of resource costs
• Places supply orders
• Monitors use of supplies and personnel resources
• Investigates supply and delivery issues
• Meets productivity targets
• Meets budget targets, i.e. cost/test targets
