Role Summary

Cardiac/Echo Sonographer

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Safety Sensitive: Yes

Definition: The Cardiac/Echo Sonographer performs diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis and evaluation of cardiovascular conditions. This role is responsible for producing high-quality echocardiographic images and ensuring accurate measurements and documentation in accordance with established clinical standards.

Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

  • Performs diagnostic transthoracic echocardiograms in accordance with current American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines.
  • Acquires, processes, and analyzes high-quality cardiac ultrasound images for interpretation by a cardiologist.
  • Performs M-mode, 2D, Doppler, color flow, strain imaging, and other echocardiographic modalities as ordered.
  • Ensures proper patient identification, explains procedures, and provides appropriate patient care throughout testing.
  • Reviews patient history and clinical indications to tailor imaging protocols appropriately.
  • Accurately documents measurements, findings, and preliminary observations in the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains equipment functionality through routine cleaning, calibration, and reporting of malfunctions.
  • Ensures compliance with infection control, safety, and hospital policies.
  • Collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and other departments to support optimal patient care.
  • Maintains continuing education and competency in accordance with ASE standards and organizational requirements.
Requirements:

Qualifications for Employment:

Qualifications for employment include the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a job, which are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.

Knowledge of:

Current knowledge of ASE guidelines for transthoracic echocardiography.

Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and hemodynamics.

Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Working knowledge of electronic medical record (EMR) systems

Skill to:

Skilled in 2D imaging, M-mode, Doppler (pulsed, continuous, and color flow), and strain imaging

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills in clinical decision-making during studies

Ability to:

Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive scanning procedures for extended periods.

Ability to lift and reposition patients as needed with assistance.

Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for diagnostic imaging and patient interaction.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians and healthcare teams

Ability to obtain high-quality diagnostic images with accuracy and efficiency

Required Certifications and Licenses:

Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology program.

Certification as RDCS (ARDMS) or RCS (CCI) preferred or required depending on facility policy.

Experience and Training:

Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is: Maintaining continuing education and competency in cardiac sonography practices
