About This Position

Reporting to the Imaging Supervisor, the Staff Radiologic Technologist performs general radiology procedures and other related functions in the daily operation of the Radiology Department. The Radiologic Technologist is also under the direction of physicians and administrator.

Working knowledge of all Radiology and office equipment used in department by:

  • Knowledge of maintenance/service of all equipment.
  • Operating knowledge of all equipment.
  • Acquires necessary paperwork for exams (order, demographic sheet, etc) and enters exam orders into Meditech system.
  • Answers telephone, takes messages, schedules patients for examinations, and explains exam preparation instructions to patient. Faxes and distributes reports to appropriate places.
  • Keeps filing up to date and accurate.
  • Releases CDs according to established procedure.

Working knowledge of Radiology procedures by:

  • Proficient in performing the following Radiology procedures: general, fluoroscopic, portable & c-arm procedures.
  • Cross-trained in at least one other modality: i.e., CT, Mammography or Ultrasound.
  • Preparation of patients for x-ray procedures; i.e., gowning and/or transporting patients to department.
  • Knowledge of contrast medias, possible reactions and remedial steps to take.

Continuing Education:

  • Attends departmental/in service meetings per department/position guidelines.
  • Compiles the necessary CEUs: RT (R) 24 CEUs in 24 months; RT (M) 15 CEUs in 36 months; RDMS 30 CEUs in 36 months.

Other duties as assigned to include but not limited to:

  • Assist Radiologist, staff and ED physician as necessary.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) duties: Perform CQI duties as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Offer positive contributions for departmental efficiency to Supervisor.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience:

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through high school diploma or equivalent and/or graduation from an approved school of radiology technology with subsequent registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and certification by the State Board of Health. Technologists licensed after 1984, must be a graduate of the American Medical Association of Radiological Technology. Previous experience as a staff technologist is preferred. Must have or able to obtain Indiana Radiological Technologist license.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Requires knowledge of radiation emitting units.
  • Demonstrates skills to position patients properly for all examinations.
  • Demonstrates analytical skills needed to make judgments regarding quality of radiographs.
  • Demonstrates well-developed communication skills to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Second modality training required (CT, Ultrasound, Mammography or MRI).
  • Seek guidance and remain knowledgeable of, and comply with, all applicable federal and state laws as well as regulations and hospital policies that apply to assigned duties.
  • Comply with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct. Comply with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.
  • Complete Healthstream Training Modules annually assigned.
  • Attendance at one in-service each year to review hospital policies and procedures is mandatory or view staff orientation presentation on the intranet and turn in quiz to Human Resources.

Working Conditions:

  • Hospital environment with hazards due to radiation. Wears lead protective aprons and gloves during certain procedures; must wear film badge and maintain strictly controlled standards. May come in contact with blood, tissue, body fluids and other biohazards.

Physical Demands:

Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., walking or standing most of the time, pushing mobile x-ray equipment and reaching) to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be physically and mentally capable of handling people who are sick and/or injured, stressful situations and flexible enough to work with many physicians. Must be able to do light to medium lifting in assisting patients to and from gurney/cart and wheelchairs.
