Head of Financial Accounting

Location: Lowesville, NC
Department: Finance / Financial Accounting
Reports To: CFO

Position Summary

The Head of Financial Accounting oversees daily accounting operations and ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting, tax compliance, risk management and audit readiness. This role manages the accounting team, leads monthly and annual close processes, maintains internal controls, and partners with leadership to provide financial insights that guide strategic decisions. The manager also coordinates all external audit activities and ensures the organization’s federal, state, and local tax obligations are met.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.

General Ledger & Accounting Operations

  • Maintain and reconcile the general ledger.
  • Oversee AP, AR, fixed assets, and other accounting functions.
  • Review account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and standardized processes across the organization.

Tax Management

  • Oversee preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns.
  • Ensure timely payment of all tax obligations.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and assess impacts on the organization.
  • Manage tax planning initiatives.
  • Maintain documentation required for tax audits and support tax inquiries.

Audit Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors.
  • Coordinate annual financial statement audits and interim audit procedures.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests.
  • Support internal audit activities.

Internal Controls

  • Develop and maintain strong internal control systems.
  • Review and update accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls frameworks.

Risk Management

  • Review risk landscape and implement insurance policies with our brokers while partnering with our Austrian headquarters on the global insurance program
  • Host and coordinate annual risk management meetings

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff.
  • Set performance expectations and conduct evaluations.
  • Foster continuous improvement and accountability.

Budgeting & Forecasting Support

  • Support annual budget and forecasting processes.
  • Provide financial analysis.
  • Collaborate with management accounting and operational teams.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Optimize accounting systems and workflows.
  • Support system upgrades or new tool implementations.
  • Identify automation and process improvement opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience with tax filings and audit management.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems, SAP knowledge is a plus
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in multi-entity or global organizations.
  • prior experience in a CPA firm
  • Internal controls experience.
  • Familiarity with automation tools.

  • Timeliness and accuracy of monthly close.

  • Timeliness and accuracy of tax filings.
  • Process efficiency improvements.
