Job Description:
The Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department is seeking a college student majoring in Recreation, Hospitality, Marketing, or related fields to assist with the development, coordination, planning, programming, marketing, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of large- and small-scale community and city-wide indoor and outdoor events.
This internship provides hands-on experience in event planning, community engagement, marketing, and program coordination.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist City staff and community organizations with the planning, coordination, and implementation of public city-wide special events and environmental programs.
  • Support the research, development, scheduling, implementation, and monitoring of recreation programs, departmental activities, and city-wide events.
  • Assist with the development of event components such as children’s activity areas, family-friendly programming, festival and concert activities, holiday celebrations, memorial services, historical programs, and sporting events. Some events may include designated areas where alcohol consumption is permitted.
  • Assist in designing promotional and marketing materials for events and programs.
  • Coordinate with departmental staff, city agencies, community groups, sponsors, and citizens to support event planning and operations.
  • Help develop new program ideas, sponsorship opportunities, entertainment options, and special events to enhance community offerings.
  • Provide excellent customer service by interacting with the public in person, by phone, and electronically to provide information and respond to questions, requests, and concerns.
  • Assist with budget preparation, financial forms, reports, and processing daily paperwork and requisitions.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data for reporting, documentation, and statistical purposes; maintain accurate records and process daily administrative paperwork.
  • Support the preparation of annual budgets and revenue forecasts, and assist with processing monetary transactions.
  • Assist in reviewing and enforcing policies and procedures to ensure events comply with City policies, ordinances, and health and safety regulations, including obtaining required permits.
  • Help coordinate and supervise logistics for departmental programs, community initiatives, environmental programs, and city-wide events.
  • Assist with equipment and supply inventory and place orders for materials needed to support programs and events.
  • Support event registration processes and assist with recording and depositing collected funds.


Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must have ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to use a telephone; read and interpret rules and regulations.

  • Requires a degree of mobility that would allow for interaction with children in active and passive games. Must have the ability to lift and set up tables and chairs and organize site equipment.

  • General knowledge of recreational activities including athletics, arts and crafts, music and dance, board games, and special events.

  • May be required to work at City special events and activities as program support staff.

  • Possess positive customer service skills and abilities.

  • Must be engaged in an academic program focused on event/hospitality management or recreation.

The ideal candidate is a junior, senior, or graduate student who is enrolled in an accredited college or university, or recently graduated (within one year of graduation).

Special Instructions to Applicants:
Students will be limited to one internship per school year.
