About This Position

Position Summary

New River Electrical is searching for a Project Manager for our Substation Division. In this position you will primarily assist lead project managers in the execution of projects ranging from small to complex, by performing coordination and administration tasks as delegated by the lead Project Manager.The Project Manager I provides critical support for these projects and will progressively develop the skills necessary to lead small to intermediate projects. Responsibilities include coordinating/supporting business development activities, preparing estimates and bids, project schedule management, planning and management of field operations, procurement/purchasing, scope definition and change management, implementing and monitoring effective safety plans, and accurately managing financials for assigned projects. This position reports to the Regional Manager of Substation - Southeast Region.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with existing customers with guidance from the lead project manager.
  • Review RFP opportunities and participate as a key stakeholder in development of bidding strategy and pricing.
  • Support and/or prepare take-offs, solicit material and subcontractor pricing and complete bids in response to customer Requests for Proposals.
  • Prepare project initiation plans for assigned projects to include manpower loaded schedule, cash flow invoicing projection, material, tool, and equipment requirements, and project specific safety plans.
  • Conduct job site safety audits under guidance from the lead project manager to ensure that jobsite safety and pre-task planning documentation is sufficient for the tasks being performed and in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Develop and communicate meaningful training to crews and crew supervision with guidance from the lead project manager.
  • Engage in subcontractor relationships helping lead project managers ensure project schedule, project scopes, and safety expectations are effectively communicated.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with project sites and customers to identify and communicate issues such as scope changes, schedule conflicts, material shortages or manpower adjustments.
  • Manage project costs and proactively identify risks to ensure projects stay within budget.
  • Support the development of project cash flows, manage project billing, and change order tracking.
  • Seek to become proficient in contract development and management.
  • Seek to become proficient in project risk management, including the identification, prioritization, and mitigation of project risks while seeking out and exploiting project opportunities.
  • Effectively communicate project details and status updates to both internal and external project stakeholders.
  • Seeks guidance, advice, and support from the lead project manager to make good business choices and decisions.
  • Support monthly work-in-progress (WIP) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Support the reconciliation of the revenue to expenses for each job on a monthly basis.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of business ethics and consistently adhere to and promote New River’s culture, values and beliefs.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience with Bachelor’s degree:
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, business, project management, or related field of study
    • Utility or construction internship experience preferred between 0-3 years
  • Experience without Bachelor’s degree:
    • Eight (8) years hands on experience in the construction field plus three (3) years supervising construction operations
    • Electric utility experience preferred
    • Formal apprenticeship programs preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in providing leadership, motivation, vision and direction as displayed on the construction site, through apprenticeship or if recent college graduate in the school or community organizations, class projects, or other relative opportunities.
  • Demonstrates ability in developing and maintaining customer relationships.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the industry.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Preferred

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the construction of all aspects of both air insulated substations and gas insulated substations.
  • Ability to read, understand, and provide constructability improvements from all issued project documents including but not limited to civil prints, below grade station prints, above grade station prints, wiring and schematic prints, station layout prints, one-line diagrams, and outage plans.

Travel

Travel for this position is required and will consist of overnight stays.
